I've got a Nuvi 2599 - had it for ages.

Latest set of maps came out and I thought I'd do an upgrade.

So, Garmin Express - normal upgrade. It tells me I can put the complete set of maps onto my MicroSD card (32Gb). Great.

As an aside, I have a Window open with the drives - it shows my Nuvi and my memory card (29.7Gb free).

The map download goes OK - it activates it. Once it starts to copy to the device, the window showing the drives loses the Nuvi and only shows the memory device - which is not reducing in free space.

Gets near to the end - and then I get a red screen saying the installation has failed - which is quite likely if it's lost access to my actual device.

When I look at the memory card, it's still empty.

Anyone got any ideas on how I can fix this? Or is my device kaput?

Alan

I recently had some very similar symptoms, when updating a Nuvi 3598...

In my case, I know the USB connector is dodgy - in the end, I had the Nuvi at 45degrees, using its weight to keep the USB plug in contact with its socket.

Failing that - if you have a copy of the GarminDevice.xml from the device - you can put it on the SD card and update that instead. (I did this the previous time I updated the 3598)

It could of course, just be Garmin Express being it's normal, wonderful self Rolling Eyes

Or maybe your PC put the USB port to sleep? In any case cloning your sd card is probably the way forward, note though the xml file needs to be in a folder named Garmin on the card and delete the xml file once the map is on the card.

This happened on 2 PCs - and the system was active all the time.

How do I clone an SD card?

As Phil explained, but place the xml file in the Garmin folder as I explained. Express will then treat your card as the device and install the map to it. If you have a card reader for your PC even better as it will then resolve any usb issues.

I'll try that - thanks.

I'm not sure about the USB port being faulty. I just did an update of the whole of Eastern Europe to the main memory and that worked fine.

Well that would have taken less time, there may be a time out issue. Out of interest I updated my wife's 2508 yesterday with the full EU map and it completed in just under 30 minutes.

Yes, but the port disappears as soon as it starts to try and copy to the SD card. I have a 500Mb/sec breadband link....

When I installed to main memory, the port didn't disappear.

Strange, suspect that's an issue with your PC then

Both my PC and my laptop? I doubt it

Anyway, I've done something with the SD card and seem to have a range of maps on there now.

I can try next time I have a spare 32gb card.

I used Phils method and installed the maps from my PC using the DC ard reader. That worked OK

Don't forget to delete the xml file off the card.
