Difficult to give an exact answer but assuming a cold start you should expect a fix in under a minute or two at the very most. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Assuming you take the receiver out of a depletion (or on a plane trip over the ocean) you need to expect a TTFF of up to 5 minutes with the receiver being in clear sky view with no obstructions.
You also need to consider that the sats are moving around all the time, so the TTFF is also a function of the current constellation and may take longer (or not) depending how the sats stand.
Here's a table _________________ Lutz

What receiver are you using? Does it have any lights to indicate a fix? _________________ Lutz

Hi,
That's interesting - you are saying 5 mins from cold but I have a TomTom silver wired GPS with TomTom v3 (with the latest updates applied) and most of the time it's ok, but sometimes when I plug it in (thinking about it, it might be mainly after i've not used it for a few days or I have moved without the PDA connected then plugged it in somwhere else) it takes about 10 minutes or so to get a fix - is this not normal?
It did it last week - I was on holiday at Center Parcs - used it to drive there fine, parked in the car park from Monday to Friday, then when I went to use it to go home, it didn't know it's position - I had gone out of the car park, down the long access road and a few miles down the road before it got it's position - about 10 minutes at a guess.
It also did it the other week - I went to a friends house for a few hours and when I came out, it took about 5 mins to get a fix.
When it's doing this, if you go into GPS Info, it's showing communication with the GPS (the little dotted line is moving) and it shows grey signal bars, but then about 10 minutes later it beeps, shows the N & W co-ordinates, compass and red signal bars.
Thanks

For a good fix the visible sats need to be as far away from each other as possible. Since they are moving around constantly you cannot predict their constellation. t may well happen that they all line up, and even if you have a strong signal from each of them the information is useless and you can't get a fix.
After five minutes they should have moved enough to break out of the line and give better readings. _________________ Lutz

I think you will get a quicker fix if you remain stationary.
i takes much longer if you start to drive.
