2003 Discovery h/f/w very poor, & mixed results using re/rad aerial.

Garmin Streetpilot Colourmap. & Garmin emap,( which is much better at receiving the signals inside the car than the S/Pilot.) used with laptop & Autoroute with speed cam. database. I would prefer to use the Mapsource v5 but can't work out how to download the speed cam. database onto it.

Citroen C3 2003, Bluetooth Globasat, on Loox 600, difficult in front, better on back window, as far back as possible, but still loses signal, sometimes strong, had 12, then nothing, and reconnection 3 minutes or so, seems OK externally, when parked, so will be trying external aerial

Ford Focus with heated front window.

Poor reception, but very useable when positioning the GPS to the far right or left where there's no heating.

I have this motor and my Rikaline X6 works really well even when on the passenger seat.

Could the make/model of GPS receiver not have a bearing on this?
There seems to be some confilcting information posted.

How well should a receiver be able to pick up the sats?

Out of curiosity I have placed my bluetooth receiver in a pocket down by the gear selector and it was able to keep a 4/5 sat fix and not lose it over a 22 mile journey.

I do have a sunroof but the shade was firmly closed so there is a possibility the signals were passing through it.

Peugeot 406 - 2003

Socket BT - works only in small special(?) 'dark' area near rear mirror! Confused
Anywhere on the dashboard there is no fix at all!

Fiat Bravo/Brava/Marea - no problem! Wink

There is good explanation:http://www.roadpro.co.uk/techTips01.asp?TechTipID=22

I have a Volvo V70 D5 2003, excellent reception, with receiver placed on the dash by the windscreen.

Wife’s 2003 Renault Scenic (with reflecting windscreen) is not the same, it will not lock when on the dash, however, put it by the door window get a lock (pretty quick) and then put it back on the dash and - hey presto - works fine holding 5+sats.

Ipaq 3970, Fortuna Clip on BT receiver, TT 3.

2003 Peugeot 307SE with coated windscreen - no reception anywhere with Navman 3000 jacket inside the car.

Using a modified re-radiating antenna mounted on the rear parcel shelf gives 5-8 on an average day with the same receiver. Thumbs Up

2002 Renault Espace - coated screen

TOMTOM Bluetooth - cradle fastened on rear of rear view mirror placing it in area of screen which is not coated, manual states this area is to allow signals through into the cabin.

TTFF about 30 secs

Regularly have 6 / above sats

On journey between Doncaster and York 2 weeks ago I noticed 12 sats on a number of occassions and up in 10/11 most of the way

Car: MG ZS
GPS: TomTom
Having had experience of setting up digital and analogue satellite dishes, I was really surprised to find out how tolerant these GPS devices are.
I suppose that is a lot down the fact that a geostationary orbit is a lot further away!

I was expecting to have to site the antenna right in the centre, front of the dash. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it worked perfectly (picking up on average 6-9 sats) tight up against the left of the windscreen.

It even seems to pick up signals in my garage which baffles me.
