Garmin 72

I've been using a Garmin 12 and am thinking about buying a Garmin 72. I've searched the site but can't find any references to either of them. Am I making a mistake?

I think the GPS72 is pretty old now. You can't load maps on it and it doesn't do autorouting.

How much are you looking at spending and what do you want ot use it for? You might be better off getting a newer model like a GPS 60c, Quest or Etrex.

I don't know if there are any decent maps for loading onto a gps for my part of the world (Rep. of Ireland). So, I'd thought I'd go budget and the 72 seems to be capable for everything except mapping. Though this leaves me stuck with my paper maps for on/off road navigation.

I'd reconsider if I got a lead on some decent maps!

Garmin's Mapsource City Select Europe v7 is about as good as it gets for Ireland mapping. Major roads are all mapped now along with full coverage of Dublin, Belfast and a number of other cities.

Have a look at the online map viewer at http://www.garmin.com/cartography/ontheRoad/

When I drive in Ireland I am mainly interested in getting directions along the main roads while going cross country and while I am in Dublin or Belfast. In smaller towns I can figure out where I am going.

If only need a GPS for off road then a GPS72/Etrex/Geko/GPS60 is probably what you want.

Beware of the cost of maps for Garmin Mapping GPS units though, you can pretty much only use Garmin's Mapsource maps and they can be expensive.
