I used the Emtac in a Laguna on the dashboard and still managed to get a few staellites. Much better on the parcel shelf. I leave mine plugged in, it hasn't blown up yet.

I'm really in a tiz! I've an ipaq 3970, I'm happy that TTN2 will be the software I'll get. But I can't decide on a receiver.

I would like my set-up to be neat, simple, and convenient. Oh and reliable!

So can I put the Emtac BT on the rear parcel shelf, and leave it on charge constantly (i.e. when the ignition is on) via a rear ancillary power socket? This way it is always powered-up and ready to go.

Also, I drive a car with heat absorbing glass, has anyone had any experience of this and their Emtac BT? It is not (I believe) the same as the Renault set-up which uses some kind of reflectance.

Thanks in advance,

aero

I'm glad it hasn't blown up - reassuring!!

I have a Saab with heat absorbing glass on all windows, so the BTGPS may not be ideal on the parcel shelf either. To be on the safe side I've ordered an antenna to go with it.

Aero,

You shouldnt leave the Emtac on all the time unless your rear power supply is on constantly, or you drive every 6 hours or so. The battery life of the Emtac is about 6 hours, so they would drain overnight and leave you with a dead unit in the morning.

It is perfectly OK to let it be constantly powered though in which case it should always have a fix unless you park in a garage.

Presumably, from your comments Mike, if the Emtac battery is flat then it won't work even when I switch the ignition on? Does it need a minimum amount of battery charge to operate?

I can always fit a 12v socket with a constant supply, or just switch it off at night! Thanks for the comments.

I have my Emtac now, and the reception in the car is very good (I think). I went out this evening just to check out the reception, I had constantly 5 or more satellite fixes (green bars -yes?), and 8 at one point! This included driving down a norrowish street with houses on both sides and overhanging trees. So the heat absorbing glass seems not to be a prob. Phew!

Just awaiting TTN2

When you run the Emtac flat it will start working again as soon as it gets power. What I was eluding to was that it would not retain its fix and may have a longer TTFF (speculation depends on how the Almanac data is stored).

My preference would be to turn it off at night time.

I think I would be happier turning it off at night.

Thanks.
