Crux View Question

I've just received my Emtac BTGPS, it seems to be pretty good so far. I haven't got my TTN2 software yet (although TomTom have emailed me to say it's on the way)



My worry was that I wouldn't get a reliable fix in the car due to heat absorbing windscreens, but so far I've had no problems (even with the Emtac in a cubby hole on the dash!)



My question is, with respect to Crux View Test Program, does View SV refer to the number of satellites visible? The manual says it's the "no. of the satellite visible" - implying only one visible at a time?



And, if you don't mind me asking, what info does the 12-Channel Signal-Level View give me?

Basically the Emtac can receive data on 12 channels at the same time. This is what is shown in the SV display. Each of the 12 bars shows signal strength for the Satellite being tracked and the satellite number.



If you have WAAS switched on then you will only be able to receive positioning data on 11 channels with the 12th being used for position correction data.

I also have a question about the crux view screen. I have seen green levels which I think means useful data is being retrieved from the satellite and blue levels which seems to mean though a signal is received it isn't useful. But what determines when a signal is useful ? (What determines when a Blue signal becomes a Green signal ?) As some of these Blue readings seem to be quite strong but can't be used to get a fix ?

Sorry to be dull, but which one tells me how many satellites I've got a fix on?

No problem aero, just count the green bars and that tells you haw many satellites are fixed.



AlienRider. There are a number of reasons why you can have a strong signal but the satellite is not used for fixing. Typically it is because the satellite technical information has not been fully downloaded correctly yet.



It is not uncommon to have a fix on 6 satellites with 2 or 3 unfixed.

The receiver will only take as much signals as are needed for a decent fix. Anything more than a decent fix would only require more calculating, and the position will not be better because of the margin of error of the GPS system. However, the receiver will acknowledge that if needed, it is indeed tracking the other satellites.

Minimal number is 2 (on the ground).
