I've got a Magellan GPS315, and the DataSend software.

I want to export the route (or is it waypoint?) info from the device into Autoroute.
1/ I can't get Autoroute (2002) to regocnise the device. It selects the correct COM port, but gives an error 'Unable to communicate with the GPS.....'.
Any ideas why ?
I think I've tried all the NMEA settings from off to 2.0 - but no effect.

2/ DataSend allows me to export the tracklog and route data - but I can't make head nor tail, and it won't import into Autoroute.
For example the Wpt file has this :
$PMGNTRK 5253.042 N 145.382 W 27 M 92432.13 A*66

I assume the first number is the LONG. - but multiplied by 100 and in decimal mins/secs. Same for the second number (but LAT). To convert these to deg/mins/secs is going to tax my Excel skills....
Also, what are the last two items ?

1. It's possible that the GPS isn't outputting the NMEA sentences that the application expects.

If you open the COM port in HyperTerminal at 4800bps, 8, N, 1, what do you see?

2. I'd guess that the last two items are altitude (probably from the WGS84 ellipsoid) and time in that order.

NMEA sentences always contain longitude and latitude values in the form
  1. degrees - two or three digits
  2. whole minutes - always two digits (so 8 would be expressed as 08)
  3. a point
  4. decimal minutes

In other words, it's two or three digits for degrees prepended to the rest of the latitude is expressed in minutes (if there's less than ten minutes, it's padded with a 0, which is why my first description is as it was).

To manipulate in Excel, you could multiply by 100, take the integer part, which is the degrees. To get the minutes, take the degrees, multiply by 100, and subtract from the original value.

There's some Magellan documentation here (click the smaller word - it's a link) - see page 10 for the $PMGNTRK sentence.

Thanks David.

Any ideas on how I can get the log into Autoroute - preferrrably as a 'route' rather than a series of pushpins ?

Someone else suggested the POI converter - but I can't seem to get the Magellan data to be recognised by it...

Unfortunately I don't know what formats Autoroute uses, so I don't know what you'd have to do to the Magellan output. This is more a question for Oldie that for me - he's the author of POI Convertor.

I sense there's a fair similarity between the Magellan output and NMEA GGA sentences, but I haven't looked that hard at it.
