A Shropshire village has installed a vehicle-activated 40mph speed indicator sign in the hope of slowing heavy-footed motorists down.

Whilst a fixed speed camera would have an immediate affect in most circumstances, it appears that this device has been limited in its success.

Alberbury Parish Council, who were responsible for installing the sign, have only witnessed a slight improvement in speed compliance from 41.6 percent in August last year to 40.4 percent now.

The average speed of vehicles on the monitored stretch of road is down from 38.6mph to 36.8mph - one driver was recorded at 95mph.

Surprisingly, police had been using mobile speed cameras in the area that were supposedly raising the awareness of those travelling through the village. They also didn't appear to have much impact on the overall numbers.

Some people will ignore speed limits. Mobile cameras are present so infrequently that the chances of getting caught are very low. Anyone who thinks 95mph in a 40mph limit is acceptable is not going to be influenced by a sign telling them how fast they are going.

If they want to control the speed through the village they need average speed cameras to monitor the full length of the limit, although this can be difficult when there are lots of junctions off the main road.

Sadly there are a minority of drivers who care little for others safety. Their excuse is often that they are above average and the speed limit is too slow for them and their superior car.

Amen to that.

I used to frequently give talks to drivers hoping to improve their driving knowledge. I used to start by asking how many thought they were above average drivers. Around 90% would say they were Rolling Eyes

When I pointed out that meant that about 1 in 2 of those who thought so were below average you could see the surprise in their faces Laughing

What I really meant to (should have) ask was were they on a speed awareness course? That would have been even more ironical. Laughing

Surely, 'average driver' is meaningless unless the method of assessing average is known?

Of courser it is, but the point was that a lot more than half the drivers on the road think they are above average and that is just statistically impossible regardless of how you measure it.
