Been with Tomtom since early Go 700 days nearly 15yrs ago, and currently use a via135 when travelling in Europe, and when hiring cars on holiday.

When in the US, I usually use waze... which is fine for me, as I know the routes, though I am travelling to South Africa at the end of the year and unsure what to do with maps..

Which is the better option
..buy the South Africa map (ideally when on sale later th8s year) around £60 now, and add to the via 135
.. buy a 5200 or 6200...and have the benefit of the unit for future trips not covered by waze, or when data may be more expensive and waze not possible, Though I have seen many negative reviews of these units
.. go for the phone app...
.. get a worldwide map unit from the US
.. get one second hand with world wide maps, though don’t think the lifetime maps moves from user to user...

Thoughts?

Hi nj1,

You could try the phone app. As you can download the maps and use them for 50 miles a day without buying a subscription. What do you have Android or iPhone?

If you have an iPhone, the iOS version of TomTom GO Mobile has been out for just over three years and is still very basic with few features, it has been called 'Fisher Price' on the TomTom forum. If you want to use custom POIs then the POIViewer app does help. I believe that the Android version of TomTom GO Mobile is slightly better than the iOS one.

Regards,
