Hi all

My Garmin Nuvi 3958 has for last few months been re-booting itself alot, upto 10 times once on a 500 mile round journey. It aslo gives me the grey screen where it loses the map, and then the machine is hunting to try and get the map back on line. I have re-loaded the maps twice, and have the latest firmware installed. Also, I have set the nav back to factory setting a few times too. I am at a loss as to what's happening, and before I throw in the towel and get a new one, thought I would ask you guy's first. So, any ideas at all people?

ps The machine is around five years old.

If you've carried out a master reset then there isn't much else you could try. Do you have the maps on the device or card? If a card I'd try a new one in case it's going bad. Also try clearing the trip log.

Can you also let us know how much spare space you have? If that's low deleting some unneeded files might help.

Hi sussamb, and thanks for your reply. Yes, have cleared trip log and maps are indeed on an sd card. If it's kaput, I'd love to know why after just 5 years. My old Tom Tom went for about twice that. ??? Thanks again.

EDit internal storage.. 429MB free of 7.02GB - Card over 8GB free

All that seems good, I have some very old Garmin devices, but like anything electronic there's no guarantee that they'll all last as long as others, some fail early. I take it you are running the latest software? And I'd certainly try running it with a new card in case the card is the issue.

Yes, SD cards are so cheap nowadays, that I would simply try a new one.
(You can always use the left-over one in another gadget).

One thing that I recall, from when my own map was dropping in and out whilst driving, is this:-
It seemed that the SD card was insecure in its slot.

I simply applied some sticky tape to keep the bug-ger in its slot, and I've had no problems since then.

Dales.

P.S. Your low(ish) Internal 'free' Storage looks as though there is a large (x Gb) detailed map in there. If it covers the same area as the map on the SD card, you could consider moving it to your PC while you check the effects.
Or post its name on here, if it is a meaningful name. (Perhaps it's in the System folder; Show hidden item in Windows).
Overlapping maps shouldn't really cause problems, but you never know.

And if it saves your device, then it's perhaps worth checking.

Funnily enough I had an issue with my DS50 on my recent French trip due to an overlapping map, but I'll raise another thread about it rather than hijack this one.

Thank you very much guy's for all your help and suggestions. I will certainly go down the route of a new SD card and give that ago. Also look at contents of the internal memory. Thumbs Up

I always delete (cut/paste to PC actually, just in case) all the foreign stuff. That saves quite a lot of space.

Help files, voices, icons, etc.

My other trick is to temporarily put a massive file on the device so the map update won't fit. That then opens up the dropdown box to select UK&I. Being as I will never leave these shores, no problem for me.

I've got UK&I on my 2597 and the internal memory is only half full now.

Depending where it's come from, job 1, test it.

Here is a thread I started over on DashCamTalk as loads of people are having SDcard issues due to the plethora of fakes coming from the likes of Ebay and Amazon. Sandisk have been heavily faked.

Dashcams put these cards through their paces so a genuine card is a must. Preferably an 'endurance' card.

https://dashcamtalk.com/forum/threads/fake-sdcards.36509/

At the bottom of my post is a link to 3 SDCard testers I've got.

Update. It's been nearly two months now, and the nav is still playing up, turning itself off and back on again. The map continues to struggle to keep up, so gonna bite the bullet I'm afraid and get a new one. Sad

What is the Garmin camper version like anyone got one who could enlighten me?
