It is so frustrating, device manager doesn't show anything highlighted. The unit obviously knows it is being plugged in as it goes into data transfer mode briefly but the laptop does nothing at all !!.
Regards the pc, this is the second unit to act this way, the previous one was tried briefly on my daughter's machine and also wasn't recognised. I will try more cables however, the cable was supplied with the unit.
Probably something daft !!

Agreed, another laptop would be useful, I really don't want to return this one as I need a sat Nav sorted.
The cable is the one supplied with unit.

Just a thought guys, if I cannot ever get into Express is that necessary as the unit does everything by WiFi ??
And I don't want to buy a new laptop !! 👍

The main reason for buying this unit was the ability to put POIs on it, and of course without usb connection that's impossible !!
What on earth is wrong ??

This is one of those problems where it's almost impossible to try and fix via posts.

In Mass Storage Mode it should work like a USB stick and after the double bong show up as a drive letter letting you view the device layout.

In MTP mode it's just another 'device' but again viewable.

Can you, via device manager, check all your USB ports and hubs and any that are set to 'allow this device to sleep' or words to that effect, and turn them off so they can't.

Thanks, I checked , two were set to allow computer to turn off device to save power, I unchecked those but still the same.
As you say I expect the double bong like a stick when unit attached, but the laptop does not respond at all. Tried several cables.

All I would do moving forward is to Google something like 'some usb devices not being recognised' and see what advice is offered.

I would advise 'Event Viewer' but that can be a nightmare to navigate.

This Garmin article seems to indicate you do need up to date Garmin drivers:

Fair enough.

Quote:
In some rare cases, Windows 8 can fail to detect certain USB devices when connected. The most possible reason for this issue can be conflicts between other USB devices that users might have connected to the computer. In order to resolve this issue, users should try removing other connected USB devices, restarting the computer, and then reconnecting only the target USB device to the computer, without connecting the other devices at all.

If the above method doesn't resolve the problem, the issue might be old or incorrect USB drivers. Although drivers for almost all types of USB ports are present in Windows 8 driver database, there might still be some ports that the operating system fails to detect. When this is the case, administrators are recommended to update old driver with the latest version of USB driver to resolve the issue.

In order to make things easier for the administrators, Windows 8 automatically searches for and downloads the latest USB drivers from the Internet. However the process of driver search and download must be initiated by the administrator manually.

Like other driver and software update processes, the update process of USB drive also requires elevated privileges. This means that in order to update the USB driver, administrator account must be used to log on to Windows 8 computer.

Just adding to this you'll see from the link that Kremmen posted Express will download any drivers necessary if for some reason they aren't present, but basically it uses drivers already installed in Windows.

However in Ks post above he mentions administrator privileges. @Lincol have you tried running Express as administrator?

Actually it's not. You could install the POIs to a SD card. With the card then inserted into your Drive it will detect them and offer to install them onto your device or use them from the card. Note if you go that route create a folder Garmin/POI on the card for the POI files.

I have my DS61 set to 'Mass Storage' and it is seen by File Explorer and Garmin Express on both my W10 machines.

To set Mass Storage.
Home page ~ Volume ~ Touch and hold the top right of the volume page ~ Configuration and Settings ~ MTP Settings ~ check Mass Storage ~ Save ~ Back arrow 3 times.

Thanks guys,
Still here, nothing seems to change my problem, I have done the things suggestedbut to no avail.
I earlier today plugged the DS 61 into a Windows 7 machine and it did come up as a device, so that checked out the DS and the cable etc. Unfortunately I couldn't install express but proved something.
I simply plug the DS into my machine and no Double bong or any indication on the laptop that I have plugged it in, the DS goes into transfer mode and counts down, showing the tower picture.
After a while it boots up ready to navigate.
That's all I get.

Well that points to a problem with your laptop then. Is it new, as I have seen issues with usb3 ports?
