Does the CamerAlert database for European countries rely only on reports from contributors?

For instance, France has an official list of 'danger zones' so is this incorporated as a base to be supplemented by contributor sightings?

I ask because on a recent long return trip across France, on main roads, I used my Garmin with both Cyclops and CamerAlert running. Whilst a number of cameras were identified by both there were some only identified by one OR the other but all cameras that I spotted were identified.

Next trip I will run Cyclops on the Garmin and CamerAlert on my phone and try to mark any cameras not showing on the phone.

The French danger zones are useless where CamerAlert is concerned, as they are zones, whereas CamerAlert uses GPS coordinates of a single spot.

We shall be happy to accept submissions of cameras for CamerAlert. BUT please be aware that it is illegal in France to use actual locations on your satnav/phone.

Hi b33jay,

My wife and I went to Disneyland Paris earlier this year and I drove. I stayed on the main toll roads as I found it easier especially as we have a French toll tag.

I had CamerAlert running in the background to TomTom app on my iPhone. I was alerted to a number of fixed cameras, I submitted unknown cameras when I could, and I also verified cameras when I could.

The UK database is very accurate, France coverage is good but as you rightly said it does rely on reports from contributors, so if you feel that you are able to then please submit what you can when in France or any other country as CamerAlert has worldwide coverage.

However as DennisN has said, CamerAlert can't do zones (lengths along a stretch of road) it can only do single point locations - which is illegal in France so please be careful.

For every camera that you submit you get an extra extension to your subscription, however you must have a valid subscription to start with! Thumbs Up

Regards,

Thank you. I already have gained two years free extension for submissions. I also have had a French autoroute tag since 2008.

I have my French/German CA on an SD card ready to drop out if need be. However, it appears that the Gendarmerie has no right to inspect a sat nav without a court order and there are no reports on French forums of any sat navs being inspected. Not surprising really as the French are far more active with mobiles cameras of various sorts including the latest mobile-mobile type mounted in cars, front and rear, and active, multi-lane and bi-directional, whilst moving.

Incidentally, the French have reverted to placing speed camera (radar) warning boards some distance before fixed cameras and every camera I have seen had such a board on the approach.
