Police and Crime Commissioner Julia Mulligan has announced that North Yorkshire is to get six new speed cameras.

All the new cameras will be van-based mobiles and sited around rural areas.

They will use Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology (ANPR) which will also help them catch "travelling criminals".

The new vehicles will be smaller than the traditional mobile camera van (pictured) and therefore more suited to operating in smaller parking spots in some rural locations.

A spokesman for the Road Safety Partnership: "We have fortunately seen the number of fatalities and casualties on our roads reduce in the past year and the new additions to the safety camera fleet will help us to reduce these numbers further."

He added: "The fact we can extend the reassurance of the safety cameras to the more rural communities of our region is great news. With the smaller vans being able to be deployed to those more remote areas and equipped with ANPR capability, not only can we increase the safety of those rural routes we can police our borders more effectively against cross border crime and successfully protect those more vulnerable due to their location, from travelling criminals."

Don't get me started, I've already contributed £90 to the exchequer and spent four hours being "entertained" about the error of exceeding speed limits in urban areas despite the fact that along with the other 60 people on my course none of us was guilty of speeding in an urban area, but guilty of temporarily exceeding the 60 limit whilst overtaking a slow moving vehicle on perfectly safe sections of North Yorkshire's rural roads. There was one bright spot; I shared a table with three working traffic police officers guilty of the same offence. I will not air their comments on line for fear of starting yet another rant on this topic.

Well if I removed all of the expletives then most of their more repeatable comments were related to money raising, inappropriate speed and the fact that it was strange how most of the camera locations in North Yorkshire had never had an accident and that they seemed to be located at safe overtaking sections of roads immediately after non-overtaking sections. I also think that most of them might be customers of PGPSW now as they were unaware of this wonderful system. Mind you it didn't help me at the time as it was a new site which hasn't been confirmed yet.

Gone are the days where your Traffic Policeman would make a decision based on the actual circumstances at that actual time.

In this day and age, there is no leeway, no allowance of 10% +1 or +2 and certainly no common-sense. Yes, those who receive that dreaded N.I.P. letter within the 14 days did so because they were over the speed limit.

It just goes to prove that speed cameras are mostly placed where they produce the greatest revenue and not where they benefit safety. All that is needed then is a a trigger-happy jobs-worth operator behind the camera.
