I was wondering what the decision process was that sees preserved railway stations mapped as 'Transport', 'Train station', but then in 'Attractions' there are a couple of preservation railways listed there.
Would it be an idea to have 'Preserved Railway' as it's own category with a little steam loco icon for example to lump all the UK's preserved railways into. Then the railway name and notes of that particular POI could be entered in the form, such as station/engine shed, etc.
Just a thought and I appreciate this might be a monumental task and not worthy of the effort but to try and find a station in Norfolk and then get there to discover that it's a closed route preservation line rather than mainline might be a bit of an inconvenience to some.
Thanks for reading anyway.

Wow! I am going to guess that this is going to be complicated.
Who is to say if the Ffestiniog railway is an attraction or a part of railway infrastructure.
If I were travelling from Conwy to Barmouth it would, without a doubt, be infrastructure. But, on holiday with my family in Porthmadog, it's an attraction.

Steam Railway as a catagory is screaching at me. Sorry Richard.

Soryy, I've not spell checked any of the names. I'll edit later if it offends.

Edited. but not for spelling!

That's an interesting viewpoint. Personally I would think that 'commuters' or other more usual rail users would find the cost of a preserved railway quite prohibitive to use to any great degree.
My view would be that to most people, the railway you mention and others like it, are first and foremost an attraction rather than a necessary means of regular transport.
It's easy to be a critic and hindsight is a wonderful thing but I would change level crossings to a gate icon then use the vacant steam engine for 'steam railways'.

There's a really easy solution- simply persuade the guy who looks after the POIs voluntarily, unpaid, in his own time, to put in the extra work. Rolling Eyes

It's a big undertaking and he is already stretched and unthanked.

Of course, I bet he'd be happy to receive a comprehensive set of files which he can use, if anyone wants to volunteer. Very Happy

Hence why I mentioned it being a monumental task.
I would be happy to help if I could. What do you suggest please?

I'm probably not helping as I am currently going through the Camping & Caravanning Club sites updating/adding them.

how about you download the ones that you think need changing, split them into what you think they should be then submit your suggested new ones. I have no idea what the workload is but I bet it would keep you out of the pub for ages!

Happy to have a go at it. I could make it a winter project. However when you say download them, is there a way I can I view/edit other than on the live database (Submit Your POI's page)?
If so that would be the way. There's more then 2½ thousand points just for stations and I can't think of a program that would display them for me that isn't on the PGPSW one

Okay, I see what to do.
I'll start working with the csv file for that category and see how it shapes up.

Well I can certainly appreciate the work involved!
Not giving up though. I have East Anglia and the South East done plus some Welsh ones.
However, here's a thought...
In my mind I reckon that old lines in preservation should go in this new category, while lines such as Whipsnade or Bressingham are 'Attractions' as they don't run on an old trackbed and often tend to be simple 'tailchasers'.
I am therefore ignoring the latter in my list of 'Preserved Railways', but they can be added at any time to the 'Attractions' category if not already in place.
Also, as POI's are basically car based, I am only including those stations where either parking is available or where the road is adjacent (where perhaps a pedestrian might be dropped or picked up).
Does that all sound right to anyone who might be interested?

Sorry dragging up this old post again. I was wondering whether my file had been rec'd as I got no confirmation of delivery and it hasn't been added to the database yet. However having read about the guy screaming that his local BK and KFC weren't sorted yet, made me appreciate that if every single map ref I put in has to be verified then that could be why it's not up yet. I sent it to the POIs@ account and assumed there might be an automated response. Never mind was just wondering really. Knowing how long it took me, it's going to be no small thing to verify them all, even though there's no research to do.

Well I see we now have a Costa Express despite already having Costa Coffee. Does anyone know if my Preserved Railways file even made it to the office?

I had problems with the pois@ email address a couple of years ago. At the time I was advised to resend the info to MaFt@ instead.

Don't forget to include Richard (Oldboy) in your communications about POIs.

By the way, I submitted the Brecon Mountain Railway Museum in July 2015. Thumbs Up

Regards,
