The photo was taken looking north from the bridge of the A34/A420 junction. What you can't see is that on the north bound lane there is a slip-road joining the A34 opposite to where the south bound slip-road leaves the A34. You do have to watch your mirrors very carefully when using that slip-road.
The other thing about the A34 is that it does carry a lot of traffic, it should be a three lane motorway!
However the cynic in me would say that the main reasons that the speed limit was lowered was to allow the speed cameras vans to raise revenue and to reduce the level of maintenance required for that section of the A34 from 70 mph to 50 mph standards. _________________ Robert.

That's a megga, megga arterial road. As Privateer says, it should be a motorway. The only way the environment, noise, danger, call it what you will, can be served is by building a bypass for the bypass!
The police must have been rubbing their hands with glee at using residents' complaints to justify setting up a mobile there. £1.3 million in fines over two years, BUT they could get over £2 million from speed awareness courses, which money goes to local rather than Treasury coffers - money for old rope and a pretty reliable income stream when you consider how many offenders would happily do the £95 course in lieu of points and £60 fine. Makes you wonder why they cut the number of policemen out there. I mean, I'd happily do it every day, all day, and provide all the gear and administer the charges - if they can generate £2 million over two years with only two hours a week, just think how much I'd be coining full time! I'd probably never get time to count it and I could retire (again) after a fortnight!
But returning to common sense, just how do they think a mobile camera for two hours a week is going to produce safety, environmental, noise etc results? A large proportion of offenders will very likely be irregular users of that road, travelling simply as part of their much longer journey. So what lesson can they learn and not speed next time? A more useful application would be a lot of Hi-viz Gatsos along that stretch, or a few average speed cameras. But that wouldn't produce the same income. _________________ Dennis
