The latest version of Garmin's StreetPilot for iPhone offers full route guidance with spoken instructions and on-board mapping. There are add-ons that can be purchased in-app to further enhance the functionality, including Traffic, 3D Panoramas, photoLive Traffic Cameras, Urban Guidance etc. Some of these add-ons are available for free and include PhotoReal Junction Views and 3D Landmarks. This review focuses on the free components of the app as purchased in the Apple iTunes AppStore.

Garmin has had a few forays into navigation on the smartphone platform, all of which failed abysmally for one reason or another. With this in mind I was wondering what the new app would bring to my iPhone. Well I can say that I am pleasantly surprised! At first sight the app looks exactly the same as the established PND software. Indeed if you have a dedicated Garmin SatNav then you will be right at home with this iPhone app.

Hmm......no 3rd party POI. Ridiculous! This obviously a commercial decision to steer you back to the stand alone units. Tom tom seem to allow POI. Have been loyal to garmin for years but they are getting worse and this cynical move insulting....

Does anyone know if there are HD android apps coming out...garmin can get stuffed!Laughing Out Loud

TomTom do NOT allow POIs the only smartphone app that does is Sygic.

You can get POIs onto the TomTom app in a very roundabout way and it is certainly more of a hack then TomTom 'allowing' POIs to be installed. As such, new versions of the app and maps tend to break the POI 'support'. So it is far from being 'allowed'.

From a technical point of view there is nothing stopping them from allowing it - see Sygic as a fine example.

As we are talking about Android apps on the iOS pages. CoPilot also allows you to add cameras and other POI's.
