Well I've just been asked by Satmap to renew my subscription to Xpedition, which means handing over a lump of cash.

Whilst I admit I do use it, it is not the only route-planning website out there. Having already given Satmap many, many hundreds of pounds for hardware and map cards I am not inclined to pay more to use their software.

When I bought my Satmap it was about the only device that gave you clear OS maps; I thought it was the bee's knees. Now there are plenty of other devices that can use OS maps, some that can use free maps. I would have thought Satmap would be keen to retain the loyalty of its customers.

Disappointed, considering I was one of the early adopters and so helped to get them off the ground.

I'm sure they would like your loyalty davidor but they probably need cash to keep going as well.

I also have paid them a lot for maps and hardware, and given a lot of time for testing etc. But I don't think I will be taking up the opportunity to pay them more on this occasion. Hopefully they can survive for a bit longer without any more cash from me.

Since my subscription will shortly expire, I've recently taken this up with Satmap - again making the case for early adopters to be given free access to the full version of Xpedition in perpetuity. Disappointingly - although not totally unexpectedly - they have rejected my suggestion. HOWEVER, their reply did end with a piece of slightly good news, thus:

"We have invested a lot of time and resources into Xpedition and feel that our current offering is very reasonable. We have however evaluated the feedback with regard to the pricing of Xpedition and in light of this have decided to reduce the Premium subscription to £20, which is very competitive. This price reduction will be implemented shortly, to coincide with the expiration of the 1 year free access."

So, although this is still £20 too much, it's slightly better than the expected £30!

I also had the mail from Satmap reminding me to renew my subscription to Expedition.
I am also an early adopter having got my SatMap in October 2008.
I really felt a little aggrieved at first as we were assured of continued free 1:25k on-line planning when we purchased.
I also felt (naively?) that as an early adopter and thus beta tester and tolerator of the early software issues, and (I think) having been instrumental along with many other users of this forum in suggesting improvements and additions to the software that have seen the SatMap maintain it's market share over the years, that we may have been rewarded with free subscriptions.
I have thought long and hard about renewal, and have finally decided to bite the bullet and sign up.
My reason is that I have looked at most of the alternative planners on the web, and find Expedition one of the most feature packed and versatile.

YMMV
