My tom tom go 1005 is now dead and after 5 tom tom devices I have had enough so I thought I would try a Garmin 3590. the problem is that the video tutorial and Written instructions on how to install the speed camera data base differ, so which is correct? |

Basically you download and unzip the database into a known folder.
In that folder you need the type of cameras you wish to use, Gatso, Mobile, specs, etc.
Each camera type needs 3 entries:
.CSV
.BMP
.WAV
All the filenames before the . (dot) must be identical for each speed limit.
Next you will require Garmins POILoader. This program installs somewhere in Windows\Program Files.
Once you find where it is you will need to hunt down an old version of SOX.exe and place this into the same directory where you have found POILoader.exe.
It has been found that you may need to experiment with different versions of POILoader and SOX.exe. If you can, get POILoader 2.6.1 and search here for links to a workable SOX. _________________ Satnav:

When you use POILoader it recognises that you have SOX.exe in the same folder and it uses SOX to collect and process the .WAV files and associate them with each camera type.
As has been posted here a few times, you do need to get an older version of SOX as the newer ones don't seem to be compatible. _________________ Satnav:

That does seem to be a variable issue on different Garmin models.
I don't think you can alter the relative levels yourself on the unit, so all you can do is reduce the level on all the sound files.
That's easy enough to do in a sound editor such as Audacity, but there are quite a few to do, so it's best to "batch convert" them as it will save you time and hassle.
To do that in Audacity
1. With no sound files open, go to the File menu /Edit chains
2. Select "Add" on the left and give the set of instructions a new name (eg "quieter"!)
3. In the right-hand panel, click on "Insert"
4. Choose "Amplify" from the list of commands, and in the "parameters" box type Ratio=0.500000
5. Click OK to enter it in the command list
6. Click on "Insert" again
7. This time pick "Export wav" (or Export mp3" if your unit uses mp3 files)
6. Click on OK again
7. You should now have a list of three commands: 1. Amplify, 2. Export, 3. End
8. Click on OK to exit the editor.
9. Now back in the main project window, select File / Apply chain
10. Highlight the one you just created and chose "Apply to files"
11. A file selection window will open, find your audio files and click and drag with the mouse to select them all. Click Open.
12. Each file will be quickly opened, adjusted and re-saved. It will all be done in a few seconds.
Your new files will have been saved in a new folder called "Cleaned" inside the folder where it found the originals.
Try replacing the originals on the Garmin with the new ones. If they are now too quiet or still too loud, try adjusting the Aptitude parameter you set in step #4 (less than 0.5 = quieter, more than 0.5 =louder) and re-run the batch process on the original files once more. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

Did you use the "batch" convert method?
If you did, is there any chance you could post the value you ended up using for "Amplify"?
It would make it quicker for other users to get it roughly right first time and have to experiment less. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

The current version of Audacity just has a slide control so you cant just type it in so this is what I found was right for me after a few goes. |
