can anyone recomend any sites where i can download icons from for a tomtom 1000 thanks.

For anything in particular?

There are an awful lot of icons provided together with the POI files from this site.
Go to the POI download page in the "Free Downloads" link at the top of this screen to check out what's available.

Basically, I'd say it's easier to get the icons from places that do the actual POI files as well, rather than JUST the icons themselves; so as well as PGPSW, you could try any of the on-line POI libraries.
Here's my list... there may well be others.

Pocket GPS World.com - UK based, international coverage. Also Speed cams.
POIPlace.com - UK based, international coverage.
POIHandler.com - UK based, international coverage.
TomTomfree.com - Single POI Files - UK based and coverage.
TomTomFree.com - POI Collections - UK based and coverage.

TomTomForums.com - POI forum - US based, mainly US and Canada coverage
GPS-DataTeam.com - US based? International coverage.
POI66.com - US based, International coverage.
POIFactory.com - US based, mainly US and Canada, some UK.

POIplaza.com - Hungarian based, international coverage.
POIPlace.com - Netherlands based, international coverage.
POIGps.com - Italian based and coverage.
OzPOI.com - Australian based and coverage.

It's also quite easy to make your own in any "paint" program on the PC.

With the latest software, the Go1000 will accept a lot more icon sizes than previous models - (from 16x16, 22x22, 24x24, 25x25 and 44x44 at the very least!)

You might well find that any "automatic" image resizer does just as poor a job as the TomTom does!

All these programs work by adding or removing pixels, and when you only have 22x22 pixels to play with, it's easy for them to lose the sense of it.

Probably better to just open the 22x22 icons in a paint program and add another one-pixel border all the way round to make them 24x24.
The program I usually use (Photopaint) can do this quickly with it's "Paper size" function.

Also, I wouldn't be too quick to start converting all the icons yet Richard. TT are aware of this issue as a "problem" rather than a "feature" so it might go away on the next update.

Would those work for all POIs? Are they only used for Proximity Warnings, rather than the map display? Do they need the _X2 in the name?

Yes they are still used, and they can be used for ANY POIs,but the story isn't simple and is different for NAV2 and NAV3 TomTom models...

Firstly, you have to distinguish between 44x44 "normal" icons and "X2" icons

A 44x44 icon can now be used on the devices as the "normal" icon (as can just about any size between 16x16 and 44x44).
On NAV3 they are shown at their actual size, but on NAV2 they are being re-sized (causing the "squashing" of 22x22 icons).

As you can see, NAV2 and NAV3 models are showing them differently at the moment and there are problems with transparent icons showing red in most sizes on NAV2 and problems with the "pointer" position" on NAV3.
It still seems to be "work in progress" as something changes every time there's a new software version!

Now, once you add the "_X2" icons for POI warnings, to give you the larger icon in the top left, this is what you get on the driving view display as you approach a camera:

So, yes, they are still useful!

OK, I done a bit of testing myself:

This is what I see for some of the POIs, the map display shows a corrupted icon, but the alert is OK, but small - this is for pmobiles.

I've changed the Asda to 24*24 and added a 44*44 _X2:

As you can see, some of the 22*22 display OK, but small, e.g. PO above!

I just have to figure out which 22*22s display corrupted, and create _X2s for those I want a warning for!

I think, in summary, then, for NAV2, 24*24 and _X2s for those that alert?

Certainly for now, yes. They might fix it again some time.

Actually... you could possibly save yourself a bit of work and JUST use 44x44 icons, as the "squashing down" seems to work quite well for those.

I wonder if you'd still have to save it as two copies ("normal" and "X2")? I reckon it might all work rather well if you JUST used a single 44x44 one.

More testing needed!

YES! If you JUST use a 44x44 icon as the "normal" one there is no need to ad the "X2" icon at all!

Here's what it looks like, just like before:

So that's just one 44x44 icon and no "X2" icon at all.

I've found that using Gimp and David’s Batch Processor (DBP) was good enough, for my personal use, to produce the 24x24s. It's made a reasonable job of the 44x44, but not as good as an expert doing it by hand!
