Has anyone any tips how to get voices working on my Garmin NuLink 1695?
I loaded the POI's for the cameras and voices in MP3 as per the instructions ... cam's work but no voice alerts? |

In that case try .WAV and the SOX.EXE program. _________________ DashCam:

Thanks,
#
Just seen my Garmin 1695 doesn't support MP3's ...
Now using POI Loader with WAV's I get an error message that its the wrong format (strangely don't get this with MP3's ... maybe its converting these itself?).
I've tried using SOX.EXE ... put it in my POI program folder ... but has no effect?
Any ideas? |

sox.exe belongs in the exact same folder where PoiLoader resides.

Dales - Thanks ... I have done this ..
ie. Put sox....exe in
C:\Program Files\Garmin\POI Loader
And then ran POI loader ... but I still get the error message re. the WAV's
I cant find any instructions specific to using sox on PGPSW ??
I'm using the latest Garmin POI loader ... is that my problem? |

Got it working ... Hooray !!!
I take back last post ...
Instructions were here for WAV's and using sox.exe:
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/speed-camera-alerts-garmin.php#installation
My error was I had downloaded sox.exe from here
http://sourceforge.net/projects/sox/files/sox/14.3.2/
and put that file in my Garmin/POI folder ... BUT the name must be sox.exe not as it is on this direct download of sox-14.3.2-win32.exe
It also wasn't obvious from anywhere on here that sox.exe is an application that Garmin POI loader picks up automatically ... I had originally run it thinking it would run in the background when POI Loader runs and convert the files ... I see now POI loader must look for a file called this when it runs ...
OK ... I should have just followed the instructions!
PS: For info ... when I first ran POI loader it kept asking me to install sox.ex multiple times ... I exited and re-run POI loader and it all worked fine ... maybe a problem with the latest Garmin POI loader ...?
Thanks for your help ... I might sell my Talex now!! |

Good
I ditched my Talex a while back after they wanted a regular monthly subscription. I did briefly try the Novus database but I quickly found 2 missing fixed cameras that had been in existence at least a year.
I decided that a Garmin coupled to this database was by far the best option.
Looking at Ash's program for inspiration, and being a developer myself, I wrote my own variant:
The only new addition to the version shown above is that I save the last set of CSV files before processing the new set.
That allows me to compare versions and write out a new file with the new cameras which I load into MapPoint to see if any are near me that I need to be aware of. _________________ DashCam:

Kremmen - Nice little utility.
Re. Talex - I just found their customer support appalling, although to be fair their paid database for £4/month is very up to date ... I've had my Garmin in the car for some time and thought I would give it a go with the PGPSW database .... so far its winning over the Talex! |

I've been using the PGPSW cam database for a week now ... and have just removed it!
I find the non-directional alerts very annoying .... plus numerous fixed cams missing ...
I spoke too soon ... I'm sticking with my Talex ... its database and the way it alerts are far superior ... worth the £3.95/month!
I accept that its partly Garmins restriction to not allow directional user POI's .... but getting alerts for cams on the other side of the road is just primitive by today's technology!
Nothing personal PGPSW team ... this is still a great site ... will probably load up the US cams where I also use my GPS sometimes ... |

I find that VERY unlikely, care to give examples?
I spend a lot of time checking cameras as a verifier and it's very rare to find one missing. To find several in a week is just too improbable for words.
Is it possibly the case that on that unit you only get alerts if you are actually exceeding the speed limit? _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

Ah yes, the old Garmin nugget and the reason why Ash and I create GPX files with embedded proximity distances coupled to replacing the @ with a # to force the unit to respond to every camera. _________________ DashCam:

You can get directional alerts with the PGPSW database, if you use the Ash10 Camera Manager.
I do - it's good (although it alerts all cameras, whilst announcing their direction of operation).
