Iíve been looking forward to reviewing this device as Iíve never really used any Mioís and the only Navman Iíve used was a ICN520 from what seems like a decade ago. When I was offered the chance of reviewing a Mio unit I opted for the Spirit 687, one of their top models. I had high hopes for this device, Mio (and Navman) have had a fairly large and faithful userbase down the years so it would be interesting to see how their most recent product stood up to the test.

I would probably agree that Mio (prev Navman) are just not at the top table.

Once upon a time Navman had easily the best maps (for exactly the road curves and twists) and shortly before they joined with Mio it started going down the Garmin method of showing roughly the road curves. So mapping is not a feature Mio is better at than Garmin/ThomasThomas, etc.

My Mio unit does not allow me to pull up a map and quickly and immediately navigate to a point by pressing the map. Whereas Garmin can.

And yes the Mio mount is just too chunky! (You're only allowed 5kg hand luggage allowance on a Thomas Cook flight!) Rolling Eyes

Let's be honest, at £99 the 685 version is a bargain and great all round, easy to use sat nav - one I would recommend to anyone who doesn't like anything too fussy with technology

At £150 the 687 (reviewed) is probably coming too close price wise to the top units from Garmin and TomTom, because while it has some nice features and ideas, its implementation is a little dated

However, the £99 model is a snap for anyone to recommend to a friend or relative who wants to plug in a set off without any help
