My tomtom one unit has been brilliant, I update it whenever possible, it has the latest map, map share updates etc etc, at the moment I am doing quite a lot of work in Manchester city centre and basically it really struggles to the point where it's totally confused! The screen jumps around like nobodys business and it becomes not much use at all. Before I get into the city centre I have full satellite signal strength and everything is fine! Obviously the problem is caused by the tall buildings etc but are the new ones the same or is it just my old unit? _________________ Graham

The latest devices are much less affected by this issue known as 'urban canyons'.
My 'How GPS Works' article mentions this issue which was, once upon a time' a show stopper for earlier GPS receivers. But those built in the last 3yrs or so have chipsets that are much more sensitive and better able to cope.
Your TomTom ONE has a more modern chipset but there have been a number of improvements since the first versions. You can also help to mitigate problems by ensuring your unit has the best possible view of the sky when mounted in your car. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Thanks, it's right in line of the steering wheel at the bottom of the windscreen. Very jumpy though _________________ Graham

what car do you have? a lot of peugeouts in particular have a coated windscreen that effects GPS reception. There are patches near the rear-view mirror though that let it through.
friend of mine has a 206 (207? - the ones that are the size of a Fiesta!) and even a modern tomtom struggles unless it's at the top of the windscreen near the rearview mirror. My iPhone 4 and iPad also struggled on a recent trip.

I'm driving a taxi at the moment - it's a Skoda Octavia!! As I mentioned though previously, before I enter the city centre its fine, on switching the unit on I have full signal within 20 seconds normally. _________________ Graham

Is there any way to connect an external GPS antenna on modern TomToms? |

No current units lack the external antenna connection and the old solution, GPS Re-Radiating antenna, are now prohibited. _________________ Darren Griffin |

I use a 540 running v8.371 and I don't have any problem in city centres. The only time it loses the GPS signal is when I go into a tunnel such as the underpasses in Leeds or B'ham. When coming out the other side it only takes about 5-10secs to get sorted out again.
I used to have the original TomTom One and that wasn't as good as this 540 at getting and keeping a stable GPS signal. |
