YouTube Link

Just spotted this video demonstration of an iPad-wifi tethered to an iPhone showing data mapping an apparent geo positioning. Note that they are not using a 3G iPad.

Although the video seems to show a relatively laggy responce to change in position it does present a raft of new possibilities for the iPhone. I had not thought about trying this myself but can recall many occations where this would have been useful.

I speculate that since these mobile devices are now able to gleen gps data from a known wifi address to show the location of that wifi hotspot it would seem sensible that the new Personal HotSpot on the new IOS 4.3 firmware would allow this too, as the iPhone 4 & 3gs come with gps onboard but as apple have a history of not including obviouse features for various security or profit related reasons I would have expected them not to have included this little gem. So a big thanks to apple.

Definatly worth a try, even if only to try it out.

Embarassed I am embarrased to say I've never subscribed to the news letter as I like to read stuff off the website front end. Plus i couldn't find it in the forum.

Ah well that would explain it then! The Other GPS News content only rarely makes it into the main site, they're only small news snippets and unique to the Newsletter.

I remain to be convinced of the use of this feature though. Apparently it's too slow for road navigation apps and I can't think of many scenarios where you would have both and would need the iPad's bigger screen?

Thats odd, seems that I already tried to subscribe as the update shows me as opted in yet my profile shows me as unsubscribed. I tried to update it again but my profile hasn't changed. Could you change my subscription status please.

I have a few iPad only apps that require location data, where a spot location would be useful out in the wild. But I would agree that that wouldn't be very often!
