|
|
I notice when I plan a route using CoPilot 8, that it initially gives the distance as "** Air Miles" which I am assuming is the straight line distance from start to finish. Then after a moment of driving it reverts back to driving distance.
I was just wondering whether Copilot could be used for an aviation purpose? I'll explain that I fly helicopters and it would be useful to me because I could just enter a postcode and the Copilot could take me straight there, perhaps using the walking mode?? There are not many aviation GPS products that have a postcode facility, not cheap ones anyway!
Any suggestions would be grateful, I would try ALK support but they havn't answered my last two emails.

As the software is designed to follow roads it actually produces a route locked to roads, this applies to any routing mode used including walking. It will produce a route but the constant re-calculations as you fly over different roads would result in a system that wouldn't be of any use in flight.
Have a look at Memory Map or Quo running on a PDA for OS style maps or even the aviation maps that can be used with Memory map - Mike |

..or if you're using Android, take a look at RMap.
From the site:
"RMaps is the navigation tool for operation with popular on-line and off-line maps. Search, auto follow, a compass, auto rotate map, POI."
Like Google Maps, but with auto-follow. Also allows you to download maps to the handset so you're not reliant on the 3G connection.
[edit] And of course, being Android, it's free ;) |

Whilst I understand the usefulness of a PostCode option for a helicopter pilot, cheap navigation systems designed for vehicle use should never be considered suitable for any aviation purpose.
As others have suggested, Memory-Map would be my suggestion. It can be used for straight line routing, has PostCodes AND they have CAA VFR charts available as well. _________________ Darren Griffin |
