No, you can't. Sorry, but it's a turkey when it comes out of the box.
But there is a way to add a custom menu which gives you SOME of the missing functions back.

Is there a Navigate To/ POI option in the menu? if so you can add third party POI files from this site as well as many others, simply copy the ov2 and bmp files to the active map folder on the device using Windows Explorer.
What it can't do is "warn when neear POI" although hacking the device to run a custom menu or installing a pre-configured MapSettings.cfg file to the unit should get the warnings working even though the option to set warnings isn't on the device - Mike |

That WILL be there, because there are built-in POIs available.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought you couldn't actually install third-party POI files either (but p'raps I'm thinking of the 'flagship' Go1000 model instead ) |

I have just purchased a Tomtom Start 2, what a disapointment, all the
menus that I want are not visable, but they are there on your new
Tomtom, just hidden away ,POI warnings, Loads of journey options, in fact too many to described,
All you have to do is follow these instructions.
1, Create a folder on the Root directory of your Tomtom called
"SdkRegistry" Note upper case and lower case
2, Open Windows Notepad.
3. Copy and paste the text below into your Notepad.
MENUBLOCK|BLOCK_MAIN|BTM_GPS_POSITION|
MENUPAGE|TASK_PAGE1| Acceuil|
MENUITEM|TASK_NAVIGATE_TO|
MENUITEM|TASK_MENU_FIND_ALTERNATIVES|
MENUITEM|TASK_MENU_ROUTE_INSTRUCTIONS|
MENUITEM|TASK_AVOID_ROUTE_LINE|
MENUITEM|TASK_MENU_PREFERENCES|"preferences.bmp"|"Préférences"|
MENUITEM|TASK_PAGE2|"next.bmp"|
MENUPAGE|TASK_PAGE2| Se repérer / Itinéraire|
MENUITEM|TASK_SHOW_MAP|
MENUITEM|TASK_SHOW_GPS_STATUS|
MENUITEM|TASK_ITINERARY|
MENUITEM|TASK_PAGE1|"previous.bmp"|
MENUITEM|TASK_EMPTY|
MENUITEM|TASK_PAGE3|"next.bmp"|
MENUPAGE|TASK_PAGE3| Favoris|
MENUITEM|TASK_ADD_FAVORITE|
MENUITEM|TASK_MAINTAIN_FAVORITES|
MENUITEM|TASK_CHANGE_HOME_LOCATION|
MENUITEM|TASK_PAGE2|
MENUITEM|TASK_EMPTY|
MENUITEM|TASK_PAGE4|"next.bmp"|
MENUPAGE|TASK_PAGE4| POIs|
MENUITEM|TASK_CONFIGURE_POI|
MENUITEM|TASK_SWITCH_POI|
MENUITEM|TASK_MAINTAIN_POI|
MENUITEM|TASK_PAGE3|
MENUITEM|TASK_EMPTY|
MENUITEM|TASK_PAGE1|"next.bmp"|
MENUBLOCK|BLOCK_PREF|BTM_DONE|
MENUPAGE|TASK_PAGE5| Navigation|
MENUITEM|TASK_NAVIGATE_TO|
MENUITEM|TASK_MENU_FIND_ALTERNATIVES|
MENUITEM|TASK_MENU_ROUTE_INSTRUCTIONS|
MENUITEM|TASK_AVOID_ROUTE_LINE|

MENUITEM|TASK_PAGE6|"next.bmp"|
MENUPAGE|TASK_PAGE6| Cartes|
MENUITEM|TASK_SHOW_MAP|
MENUITEM|TASK_SHOW_GPS_STATUS|
MENUITEM|TASK_SWITCH_NIGHTVIEW|
MENUITEM|TASK_PAGE5|"previous.bmp"|
MENUITEM|TASK_SET_VOLUME|
MENUITEM|TASK_PAGE7|"next.bmp"|
MENUPAGE|TASK_PAGE7|favoris / POI|
MENUITEM|TASK_ADD_FAVORITE|
MENUITEM|TASK_MAINTAIN_FAVORITES|
MENUITEM|TASK_CONFIGURE_POI|
MENUITEM|TASK_PAGE6|"previous.bmp"|
MENUITEM|TASK_MAINTAIN_POI|

MENUITEM|TASK_PAGE7|"previous.bmp"|
MENUITEM|TASK_SET_NAME_DISPLAY|
MENUITEM|TASK_PAGE9|"next.bmp"|
MENUPAGE|TASK_PAGE9|Navigation|
MENUITEM|TASK_MANAGE_MAPS|
MENUITEM|TASK_SET_TOLL|
MENUITEM|TASK_SET_PLANTYPE|
MENUITEM|TASK_PAGE8|"previous.bmp"|
MENUITEM|TASK_ABOUT|
MENUITEM|TASK_PAGE5|"next.bmp"|
Save this file, in the SdkRegistry folder as Tomtom.mnu
Switch your Tomtom off then back on.
Your Tomtom will look the same, Press the map screen to get the usual
options, such as Change Voice etc, when you press Done, rather than
just going back to the map screen, you will go to all the other menus.
If you decide that you do not want these extra menus, then all you have to do is delete the Tomtom.mnu file that you created, your Tomtom is back
to the same conditionas it was before.
I would love to take the credit for this work, but it's not mine, and sadly I forgot to save the internet address from where I got it from,
The file information above is copied fronm my Tomtom Start 2
Use it and enjoy

Possibly here!
It's certainly been discussed on here. (e.g. TomTom start + SDK mnu allowed?) |

Looks to me like they got this work from the Pocket GPS site, and claimed it as their own.
Still I hope it helps others
The only reason why I looked into this subject, was that I had paid my subscription to Pocket GPS for the Safey Camera database only to discover
that unless you can have PIO warning sounds, the database is all but useless to the average user, I dont know if Pocket GPS warn future subscribers of this ?

From the compatibility chart on the database download page..... Quote: | START and Ease do not offer functionality officially but this can be implemented via a custom menu. Please see the forums for details. |

I've been playing about with the above menu and it seems to ignore the first 4 pages, so I've rewritten it and changed the French bits to English. I added the Change Owner option which allows PIN code implementation.

I am using the code as at the top of the page on a start 1 and it is working.
So I have the odd French word which I can change.
There are two other points:
In the menu when you get the grey arrows one on the left and one on the right they are both pointing to the right. If you pres the one on the left you do go backwards. I am presuming that is previous.bmp, is there a way to change it so that it points to the left.
I can not work out how to change the time on the unit.

I could not exactly remember where I got info from to change the menu but it was obviously from this post:
http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=136159
My screen is exactly the same as the images so I presume that is how it is - which is not really a problem for me.
So all I really need to know is how to change the time?

The sdk work around seemed to stop working on my Start (1) with the upgrade to one of the 9.0xx navcores. Has anyone definitely had it workng with a later Navcore? |
