I currently have the GO 500 and I find the spoken speed alerts very useful, I want to upgrade to a new Tom Tom widescreen, and maybe a slimmer model, not bothered about the live service but i do want to retain the spoken speed alerts can anyone confirm if this is still an option on the new models or would I be better off getting a refurb 730 or 930, and would they work on them?
Thanks in advance |

Hi mij86
If you can get a 720 then you will own the best of the bunch. I have had mine ever since it was released and it has never given me a single problem.
Kate gives me the spoken speed alerts cheerfully and clearly. _________________ Tomtom Go 720.

It will still all work fine, on any TomTom that has full support for user-POIs.
This rules out the "Start" and also the very new "XL IO Routes Edition v2" (Shown on the TT website with a VERY tiny "2" after the word "Edition" - almost as if they were trying to hide it ).
The original "XL IQ Routes edition", which is still being sold, is OK. |

520/ 530 for UK&ROI use
720/ 730 for Western Europe use
920/ 930 for Western Europe and North American use, in addition you will get a remote control (that eats batteries faster than you can eat breakfast) and the device is fitted with EPT an electronic "gyro" for working out where you are in a tunnel (not much use in the UK as tunnels don't tend to have junctions within them like they do in Europe).
After the the above devices the only other unit I would consider is the 940, whilst its a Live device it still has all the capability of the x20/ x30 unlike the 540, 740 and all x50 units - Mike |

I was recently in the exact same position and opted for the XL Live IQ Routes Regional Edition. At only £136 from Amazon (I see today it's £149.99) I thought this was a very good buy. I thought I wouldn't use live services either but am enjoying the free trial. If I decide not to use it then it's no loss but at least the functionality is there in future if I change my mind. The non-live version was actually more epensive when I looked on Amazon as the live version had a heavy discount.
From what I could see the only thing I lost by not going for the significantly more expensive 500 series was bluetooth connection for my phone. On balance I thought I could do without this as support for new phones from TomTom is not the best and there are plenty of cheaper and better solutions out there for hands free phone. |

Bluetooth is also useful if you want to subscribe to GPRS traffic information.
The Live units don't allow you to subscribe to GPRS traffic which is a con, as the GPRS traffic is currently still much cheaper than Live Traffic, and that's why I upgraded to a 930 some time ago now. _________________ GO 620, Tomtom Android EU,

The GPRS traffic was not worth the money you pay for it. It is fundamentally unreliable. LIVE traffic on the other hand is much more reliable, and worth the money for most people. Not supporting GPRS in LIVE just reflects the value. |
