Can anyone help. I have searched the forums but cannot find the answer...

I am thinking about buying a lead from Maplins to connect my rather old Garmin GPS III to my laptop, so that I can track my position using Autoroute 2004. My GPS III is NMEA 0183 v2 compliant.

Do you know if this will work? Has anyone tried it?

thanks

If your laptop still has a serial connector then this will work without problem.

I havent used the GPS III but I have connected a Geko, and a GPSMap 76 to my laptop with no problems. The only thing to remember is to check the Protocol, as Garmins do tend to default to the GARMIN protocol not NMEA

I have connected my GPS 3+, (now sold) and my GPS V to a laptop using the supplied serial cable, and I have also made my own. All you need is a 9 pin male connector and a Garmin 4 pin plug, which you can get from here, some 4 conductor cabel (telephone wire is adequate) and a slodering iron.

If your laptop only has USB ports you can get a dedicated Garmin/USB cable or use the one you're going to make(!) in conjunction with a Serial/USB adapter cable.
