Check the "rating plate" on the charger bodies. They should both be 5v and if the amperage is the same (1.2A, 1.5A, 2.0A, etc.) then no problem. |

Yes, either charger will work fine with either of the devices - Mike |

Mike, one of my TT chargers shows 2 amp. (others are 1.2)
Can it still be used in all models I have here? _________________ David |

Sorry to butt in, but it's the output voltage that is the most critical - these must match identically or else you're going to be in a world of pain.
The current (A) rating isn't quite as important - the unit being charged will draw as much current as it needs - anywhere between ~0 (if it's fully charged) and maximum (if the battery is completely flat + backlight on maximum + accessing HD traffic + using FM transmitter - you get the idea). All that would happen if you plugged a unit into a charger with a 1.2A rating and it needed more (eg 1.5A) is that the output volatge would drop and so the unit would probably turn off/stop charging.
To be honest if a unit needs anywhere near these limits I would begin to worry about it.
So in a nutshell: Provided the voltage is the same, you're unlikely to damage your unit by plugging it into a charger with a lower current rating - it might not work, but it's v.unlikely to permanently damage it.
It's probably down to economics - a charger with a 2A rating will require more expensive electronic components to build than one with a 1.2A rating |

I have never seen a mini USB charger with anything other than 5V. _________________ Drivelux |

Yep, me neither (there's probably something in the usb design regulations relating to this) but it'd be quite dangerous - you could end up damaging equipment if it was designed to give say 7V and you forgot and stuck it in something designed for 5V!!
You'd have to be an idiot to design it with anything other than 5V on it.
Coming soon:
TomTom's new 7V charger! |

Thank you Robbooth.......
The 2amp charger came with my 720; the 1.2 amp ones came with units with less 'robust' hardware. _________________ David |

I use the 2 Amp charger lead to power the iPhone sat in its car kit, I cannot remember which device it was supplied with - At the end of the day Mini USB dictates 5V so if the plug fits use it, the current is only important IF the device being powered is pulling more than the charger can deliver as this will lead to the device shutting down due to low battery and/ or charger damage as running electronics at over their 100% rated capacity generally shortens there life - Mike |

Have you not tested the current requirements from the PSU under various conditions of the various TTs that you have Mike? |

Never bothered to be honest but if there is interest in this subject I might make up a lead that is capable of routing the power line through a high accuracy low current clamp that I have, would have to split the power lead down to gain access to the positive or negative cable though - Mike |

if there is interest in this subject I might make..... | Not personally, not having a TT . It only just crossed my mind, as there have been several posts along the lines of this thread in the past, and knowing what a learned man you are....... I just wondered |
