I have SmartST Professional v1.96. However, I can't use my Road Angel with it (COM1, NMEA 4800) as a GPS receiver.
Is this because the software's locked to Navman receivers? |

My understanding is that V1.9x is locked to Navman receivers, V2.x is 'open'. _________________ Tim |

If you purchased SmartST Pro bundled with a sleeve, then it will be locked. If you purchased it with the Bluetooth GPS, then it will be unlocked. |

Really, Dave? Mine was packaged with the Navman bluetooth receiver, but won't work with a serial connection. Can you help explain the deviation please?
BTW I managed to get TT3 and SmartST going at time same time today, with a serial connection on TT and bluetooth on Navman. |

Providing you can go into the GPS Setup screen in SmartST Pro and you are able to turn it off, and select a COM port, then you have the unlocked version. What you may find is that when you have TomTom installed, it installed the TomTom ~ GPS driver which is a COM port fudger. This may be re-mapping COM ports and causing a problem with SmartST Pro and other programs on the PPC. I know it has with me on nearly all applications and I have to uninstall the TomTom ~ GPS driver. TomTom will still work fine, but it's just patch on Bluetooth to stop the hanging when powering down the PPC. Darren says the new version of TomTom GPS Driver doesn't install the TomTom ~ GPS but I'm currently heavily into reviewing another program so haven't had the time to test it yet.
And for anyone interested, a mammoth review will be out next week |

The Navman bluetooth GPS will work with TTN3 by setting the Gps to:NMEA 0183v2 and Bluetooth Serial Port Com8. It seems to be the best setting ! |

I can change port settings, and turn the port on and off. Will uninstall TomTom ~ GPS and see what happens. |

Dave, I uninstalled TT ~ GPS.
TT couldn't run because of missing component. Same with TT GPS application.
SmartST still couldn't see COM1 NMEA 4800 GPS data.
Any other ideas please, Dave?

Try running WinFast Navigator and seeing if you can connect. It's possible that your COM port has been mapped, so try other COM ports in WinFast Navigator.
Usually uninstalling TomTom ~ GPS and soft resetting as it asks you to will still allow you to run TomTom and the GPS applet, just make sure you don't uninstall TomTom GPS (no tilda).
For WinFast instructions/download, try this

Dave
I've done everything you've suggested. I have even reverted back to TT GPS 2.07.
Winfast Navigator sees COM1 as expected, as does TT3. No such luck with SmartST though.
Any other ideas?

That's really weird, so you can connect under WinFast Navigator and get a 3D Lock ? |

Yes, Road Angel connects to WinFast Navigator and get "development" messages.
Although I can change ports and NMEA in GPS setup in SmartST, it cannot receive GPS data from COM1.
Bluetooth on COM8 works ok.
Will try my Emtac jacket and see what happens. |

Well, the plot thickens.
I tried my Emtac Jacket with SmartST and it worked beautifully on COM5, NMEA 4800.
So why I can't get the Road Angel to work on serial port COM1 on SmartST?
I've sent an email to Navman support to see if they can throw any light on it. |

It's possible that they're checking for GPGSA and GPGSV before they allow for a fix, but the Road Angel won't support both. It really shouldn't be a problem with most software, but Navman's does seem to be a little more temperamental than most. |
