The Cat & Fiddle road between Buxton and Macclesfield is to get Specs cameras by the end of March.

Head on cameras to catch bikers with no front plate? No mention of taking care of that factor!

Given the largest issues on that road where speeding is concerned is bikers I think it is safe to assume it is designed to catch bikers Wink

Cat and Fiddle road is famous for bikers, so one would like to think so. But how many Specs Average Camera systems catch bikes from behind? Given that it's a well known problem, you'd think "they" would have Specs cameras which trap from behind, not from in front. If such exist, why aren't they used all over the country - at present, Specs cameras only catch head on number plates, thereby missing bikes, unless I've missed something?

I don't claim to know the detailed reasons but SPECS 2 was only Type Approved for forward facing deployments.

SPECS 3 is approved for front and rear facing and can be used in either mode or indeed both. Most new deployments are SPECS 3 and so it is possible for the Cat & Fiddle SPECS to be either rear facing or a mixture to cover all eventualities.

Thanks Darren - I didn't know Specs 3 were both ways, sorry.

Is there a visible difference, or will we just see them mounted back to front?

The middle Specs in use here on M4 near Bristol have a couple of cameras facing each way on one of the poles. I assumed it was in readiness for contraflow.

DennisN, I've noticed them as well, I wondered what they were for. Have seen a row of three cameras on the pole with the middle one pointing away from traffic flow. I originally thought it might to be to pickup traffic coming toward it in the contraflow.

As I ride a bike as well - soon to get a new Thunderbird (if I can scrape the money together) - I have a special interst so to speak.

They are still only designed to face "one-way" but can be installed in either forward or rear facing modes.

Here is a comparison pic, SPECS3 is quite easy to spot:

But they will be so easy to defeat.

I have seen bags on a rear pannier 'accidentally' hanging over the number plate. And a pillion passenger only has to put their hand over the plate as they pass the camera.

Hmm maybe but then again there aren't always pillions and sports bike riders don't carry bags.

They soon will if SPECS cameras appear on their favourite racetrack.

M4 West and East, J18 to 19 Bristol, single camera facing each direction. Get your pillions out!
Apologies for quality, it was Vera's first attempt to use my little camera and you don't get many tries.

Front facing SPECS cameras to slow bikers down? EPIC FAIL Laughing

SPECS to read those tiny numberplates that the bad boys have on their bikes? FAIL again Laughing

They can't be that dumb, they must be putting in rear facing ones. Alternatively, maybe they want to slow all the cars down so the bikes can use them as a slalom course? Result!

Oh well, it looks like bikers will just have to go somewhere else and kill themselves.

Best solution I saw was a bike that was painted completely white, no graphics at all, and its rear number plate read F*CK YOU (I kid you not!) . I had my elderly parents in the car with me at the time and I was praying they didn't see it...

Just to resurrect this topic: anyone who travels the Cat & Fiddle knows that if you take the rat run between the cameras you'll travel an unrestricted road (so 60 mph), travel a shorter distance and negate most of what the SPECS is meant to do! Doh! Case dismissed!

I'd also add, as a car driver, that I rarely see bikers being idiots. Now car drivers, that's a different story (my OH got overtaken one night and the car went straight on at the corner, through the fence and down into the field!) Rolling Eyes
