Found this little article:

http://www.getsurrey.co.uk/news/s/2062839_two_new_speed_cameras_planned_for_a24

So watch out in the new year.

Something odd here. £70,000 to provide two hard standings for the cameras? Since when did a Gatso (et al) require a £35,000 hard standing? All my local ones only need a pole and a hole with an electric string coming out of it. And £35,000 is a heckuva price for a hard standing.

Sounds like the usual poor standard of reporting accuracy to me.

I read the article and it seems that the hard standings are for vehicles, not fixed cameras

So did I.

I reckon that I need to change jobs, if the report is true and if they really are gullible enough to pay out £35,000 per hard standing (i.e. one parking space) that has a bit of fencing, hardcore, tarmac, and possibly kerb stones. As it's Christmas time, I might even give them a slight discount as a loss-leader in order to build extra ones! Laughing

Regards,

No, none of that! All they need do is scrape the surface with a JCB to reasonably flat/true and level with the edge of the road surface, then lay that thick plastic mesh which allows a small amount of grass to grow up through and chuck a bit of sand and grass seed mixture over it to fill the mesh. There are dozens of such police hard standings throughout the country. I'd offer them a bigger discount than you AND I'd subcontract it out and still make a fortune without getting my hands dirty! Half a day's work for one man and his JCB (if it's a difficult traffic situation, extra half a day to lay out and recover cones). Max £2,000 and that's being very generous. Rolling Eyes

Well I'm certain that they've changed it from the initial report which said that it was going to be 2 fixed cameras.

It's still a money making racket which ever way you look at it.

You are right, I too am certain they've changed it from 2 fixed cameras - hence my first post which said "two cameras" and "Sounds like the usual poor standard of reporting accuracy to me".

They're still going over the top anyway. Why can't their vans park on existing overbridges and in laybys and on verges like all the other moneymakers do? Those existing facilities don't seem to need (Health and Safety) hard standings and safety fencing.
