On my TTone Ver3 I updated to latest maps in August with no problem. Have been using it each week but last week suddenly I am faced with the following icons greyed out:FIND ALTERNATIVE,CLEAR ROUTE,MANAGE FAVOURITES plus on Navigate to HOME, FAVOURITES,MY LOCATION,TOMTOM BUDDY AND POI also greyed out. Tried a restore but that showed"No backups Available". I also found that the MAPS folder was empty. So far I've had no response from TT support online!!
I would appreciate it if anyone has had this problem or knows the cause could help me on this. Thanks |

Welcome to the forum:
For the Find Alternative, Clear Route needs a route to be set otherwise these options will be grey as they have no function.
For Manage Favourites you need to define at least one Favourite using the "Add Favourite funtion, without a favourite set there is nothing to manage which is why this is greyed out.
Navigate to Home requires you to set a Home location, without a Home location set this icon will be greyed out.
Navigate to Favourites need at least one Favourite to be set for this not to be greyed out.
Navigate to My Location needs a GPS position fix for this to be not greyed out, take the device outside, although this option is useless, why would you need to navigate to where you currently are?
TomTom Buddy needs a data connection from your mobile phone via the bluetooth connection, assuming your device has Bluetooth quite a few newer devices don't have Bluetooth and this icon is only available to use with a HD Traffic receiver plugged in, these HD Traffic receivers are not available outside of Holland and will only work within the Dutch borders.
Navigate to POI shouldn't be greyed out unless the POI.dat file is missing from the Western_Europe or UK&ROI folder (as applicable) or you have no custom POI files installed.
For a backup use Windows Explorer (read the FAQ page at the top of this forum index page - Mike |

Other then the greyed out icons, is the unit working/navigating/showing maps OK?
Can you got to "Browse map" and then use "Find" at the bottom to locate any POIs at all?

Please. please follow Mike's advice and make a backup with Windows Explorer (not Home) NOW. If we want to fiddle any further, we need the security of knowing we can get you back to this point.

On some models there is a folder that is actually called "maps". This is only used by TomTom Home when you have downloaded a new map and may have a single tiny .tlv file for each map. Don't worry if it's empty.
The important folder that actually contains the map data will be called "Great_Britain" or "Western_Europe" or something similar. |

Thanks for your replies. My maps were accesable and I am now in the process of entering all My Favourites again (via Navigate to) but seems to have solved the problem. I still can't understand how this could have happened!
I have now learned a lesson for the future DO NOT BACK UP ON THE TOMTOM! I will only backup on the computer in future.
Thanks again, now back to the hard slog. |

As another tip I wouldn't use Favourites as they tend to get messed up with map upgrades, you would be better saving each location in a custom POI file which offers a number of benefits:
1/ Doesn't get affected by map upgrades
2/ Can store thousands of individual locations in a single file
3/ Can store phone numbers against each location (where applicable)
4/ Easy to port to other TomTom based hardware/ software

Thanks Mike. Sounds like a brilliant idea but not sure how to do it. I'll see if I can find it in FAQs. |

Going on from this, my GO 910 suddenly greyed out various icons, but not the ones listed above. They are:-
* Disable bluetooth
* Disable wireless data
* Edit TomTom Plus account
Also, the "Mobile phone" icon has disappeared altogether. It shows up on TomTom Home, but not when operating the unit. The "* Edit TomTom Plus account" works in TomTom Home, but is greyed out when operating the unit.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks. |

At a guess the Bluetooth is disabled on the device, try Change Preferences/ Enable Bluetooth - Mike |

Try resetting the device with a pin (the reset hole is near the electrical connection on the underside of the device) - Then see what it does, you won't lose any settings or data by doing this - Mike |

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the further suggestion. I did that as a first measure, and also did a factory reset - neither made any difference. Swapping maps (e.g. to Canary Islands) makes no difference, so it's presumably something in the root directory which is causing it. I've stopped short of doing a Restore, but I've got that in mind as the next measure. Looking at the files in the root directory, there are none which are different in size to those in the backup root directory, and most have the same time stamp. I know that doesn't eliminate the possibility of a corrupt or changed file, but that's the state of play at the moment. Just really stumped as to why the Mobile Phone icon has disappeared, and two other related icons are greyed out.

Can you do this?
Download and run the Clear Flash tool found here
Run it 3 times.
See if that helps........... _________________ David |

WOO HOO. What a superstar. All sorted - thank you so much. I'm unclear what that did, so could you perhaps enlighten me? I have no flash card on the GO 910 (only the hard drive). |

The "ClearFlash" utility clears an area of the internal memory that isn't accessible by other means, it isn't anything to do with SD cards or the 910's hard drive, nor the 'normal' internal memory used on recent models.
It seems possible for that area of memory to get clogged with too many files which don't get deleted properly, and this can cause several problems.
On THIS PAGE, TomTom suggest a few of them:
Quote: | * You are unable to activate the map on your TomTom device even though you have a valid product code.
* You have to enter the passkey every time you connect your TomTom device with your mobile phone.
* Your settings are not saved when you turn your TomTom device on and off.
|
But we've already found several more problems that it can fix, so it's becoming something we recommend when we don't know what else to suggest! |

Actually, since my last post, I've stumbled across something which might be the key to the issue. I installed the add-on "Height" (see http://www.tomtomforums.com/tomtom-one-xl/16378-height-altitude.html ) which requires a folder called "Height" in the root directory, plus a file called "ttn" in the root. Running the flash tool removed the ttn file and fixed the problem. After the fix, I saw that the height (altitude) display wasn't working, and saw that the ttn file was missing. so I copied it back. Lo and behold, the missing/greyed icons issue recurred. So I can say that the presence or absence of the file "ttn" has a direct bearing on the problem. It hasn't until a couple of days ago though, so I'm intrigued. |
