Is it true that Route Planner will cost to use? I have yet to have a look at this but I understand form comments on previous threads that it is not up to much.

I really don't want to pay to utilise this facility if it is not worth the bother.

I am really disappointed that Satmap wish to charge for something so fundamental to GPS mapping.

I would welcome any comments

As no one else has commented I will try to respond to your question, but as you say that you have read the threads here I'm not sure I will be able to add much.

Satmap have posted the following on their site:
Quote:
The Route Planner and Route Share Network is available free of charge to all customers who have bought their Active 10 before Monday 23rd March 2009 and also registered their unit prior to 1st April 2009. For Satmap customers who fall outside of these requirements access to the Route Planner and Route Share Network costs £79.99.

So if you registered before 1 April then as far as I can see it should be free. If you did not you have the option of paying if you wish. However as the A10 is designed to allow you to do your route planning on it and there appear to be a number of other options which allow you to do some planning on your PC and may be cheaper you may choose not to. As I see it the big advantage of the Satmap route planner is the 1:25,000 coverage of the whole of the UK combined with satellite coverage.

So to repeat. If you registered you should have no problems using it for free if you did not you makes your choice and pay or don't.

Hope that was helpful.

Further to what Mike has said,I think it would be a good idea if upon buying an Active 10 access to the Route Planner was free for say a week or enabled the construction and download of perhaps two routes so purchasers could see what it was like before spending what is quite a bit of money on something that is sight unseen.

Doesn't access come included with the A10 PLUS? I'll bet the early adopters who got free access will have to pay next year though.

For those who registered before 1st April the Route Planner is free to use and my personal opinion is that it's very good. You can plan routes on OS maps anywhere in GB and then print them with your route shown. You can also download them to the Active 10. Admittedly the area printed is fairly small (about A5) but all these maps are free! After 1st April of course there is a hefty fee.
Satmap told me that the only reason they would charge in future for this facility is if the OS revoked their licence, which they claim is 'highly unlikely'.

If you consider the price of the bundled accesories that come with the plus device you are getting the route planner for free. There are other options though such as the free to use online planner by the hug, if you need a link I will post one later when I get home, or consider Qup topo mapping for the PC - Mike

Thanks to those that responded to my question....the thing is I currently plan Routes utilising 25000 OS maps on Memory Map and then recreate the route on SatMap this is a waste of time ! but Memory Map allows excellent route planning and I would rather continue this way than pay £80 for an inferior planner. The other point is that I can transfer Memory Map Routes to a Garmin for free, although I realise I have already paid for Memory Map.

....and another thing it occurs to me If I had Route Planner and had to pay for it I would have paid licensing fees indirectly 3 times to OS. Once through Memory Map, once when I purchased Satmap SD Maps and again when I had to pay for Route Planner. Seems very unfair to me.

The only major complaint I personally have with the Route Planner is its size.If it filled the screen and did away with the grey bits at the side I would be a happy man, especially useful on the 1:25000 maps.

I realise that others have different problems with it but that is my main gripe.

This could of course be something to do with the licence from the OS who always seem to put their meddling oar into an otherwise good idea.

Quite, plus a licence every time you buy a paper map as well,or an OS map printed on a tea-towel.

Why on earth it isn't possible to buy a personal licence from the OS whose number, for instance, you could quote when purchasing further mapping is beyond me.

Hold on,no it's not,the OS wouldn't be able to fill its fat pockets with repeat licence fees.

The OS is targetted to be privatised in the not too distant future so I can't see anything improving, only getting worse.
