Hi.

I run a travel company that wants to develop the ability to send routes to rented GPS devices when they are 'on-the-road'. I know this can be done by creating routes / POIs / GPXs and downloading to GPS device from a PC that is online. But can this be done to un-connected devices?

Wireless internet connection presumably required, so options are iphone / nokia navigator or 'normal' GPS devices using Bluetooth through another device. But as I understand it, the internet portion of these devices doesn't 'speak' directly to the GPS portion?

iPhone particularly interesting because of other apps it has.

Any help / advice appreciated.

Navman Wireless (No longer related to Navman consumer devices) do a combined navigation and fleet tracking system (M-Nav650) which should be able to achive this, and much more. I would suggets looking at this and other similar products (I think Tomtom and Garmin are in this market space as well). Search the web for Fleet Tracking / Navigation.

Rolling you own solution with a Tomtom, Bluetooth and cell phone is a option really only if you are pretty capable with all the technology and have plenty of time and resources to burn.

Maybe another option is a WiFi SD card that would allow an internet connection in a WiFi zone. In a Windows Mobile device the GPS should be able to see downloads. Cost is about 20 per card

I don't see your location, but I'm assuming you're not in North America. If you were, MSN2 on the Garmin's would allow remote send. I use it often to dispatch a crew out on the road taking care of another project.
