Mapping an amateur rally car

Hello,

I am looking to map the route of an amateur rally car.

The car will be fitted with a Socket BT GPS Receiver and an Ipaq H2210. I will be using this equipment as a data logger only. I will then want to trf the data to my laptop (again via BT) and map the route on a map and graphically (distance travelled by time elapsed, etc.). I will also want to show speed on the map.

I know all of this data is available, but I cannot extract if from the GPS file. The file is in the following format:-

As the vehicle will be completing section and not laps, I will manually start and end the logging.

I am using the standard Socket Navigation software to collect the data. Should I use something else?

Which software is best to map the route? I have tried using MapPoint without success as I cannot extract Lat / Log etc.

The lat/long are the long figs after the N and W. If you're looking for a bespoke system then the only way would be to write a program to retrieve this data from the NMEA logs and then convert it.

If you have a true data logger like a RBT3000 then you would be able to playback the whole route against a GPS application and watch you re-drive the route which would probably be of more use, but if you're looking at timings then GPS really isn't going to be 100% accurate.

Do you know of any software that would batch translate the NMEA file format to Decimal Degrees?

Do you or anyone know how to translate NMEA into Decimal in Excel then?

The below shows what i have got in the NMEA file and what i need to import.

NMEA (DDDMM.MMM) to Decimal Degrees (DD.DDD)

5241.8772 N 120.5954 W
to this
52.6979533 -1.3432567

Also has anyone managed to calculate speed from an NMEA file?

You're not going to get far with what you have I'm afraid, two options I can immediately think of are:

1. A RoyalTek RBT-3000 Datalogger BT GPS, this will capture the route to it's internal memory. Using the supplied app you can then d/l the data to a text file and if you wish replay it in any GPS enabled app at your leisure.

2. Memory-Map software coupled with the above or running whilst you drive will capture the route overlaid on the map and will also contain speed data. The route can be reviewed after the drive and uploaded to the PC client for Memory-Map. Hovering your mouse over the track will show speed data as well.

I'd hack this sort of thing in perl. And have done so, as a matter of fact.

Depending on your receiver, you may be able to enable the VTG message which gives speed and course. Failing that, you can calculate distance yourself and you know the time interval between messages...
