Car GPS Navigation Systems or Global Positioning System was first implemented in the year 1978 by the United States Department of Defense. GPS receivers obtain information from 4 different satellites and make use of it to compute its own location by comparing its own time with the given time of the satellites. The differentiation between the two times, disclose the space taken by the receiver from the satellites. Due to the checking of time against three satellites, a receiver can locate longitude, latitude and altitude or the positioning system on earth. The automated routing system provides addresses or waypoints and the GPS unit will calculate a direction for you and assist by giving instructions.

Hi,
I have hesitated from offering an explanation because I'm unsure of what you are seeking. It rather reminds me of the old joke where little Johnny arrives home from school and asks his mother where he came from. After a long explanation about the birds and bees mum asks why he wanted to know: well Johnny replies "Billy Jones says he came from Nottingham". So, if you want to know the basic principles of how GPS manages to give a position, I'll have a bash.

Ever wonder how that neat little GPS device works in your car? Well, the device receives information from the Global Positioning System (GPS), which consists of a couple of dozen satellites orbiting the Earth. Their orbits are arranged so that at least four satellites are always in view from any spot on the planet. A GPS receiver locates four or more of the satellites, determines their distance from the receiver, then uses this information to calculate the location of the device itself. That's how the device knows where you are and can even tell you how to get where you want to go.The GPS 501 is a great handheld and recreational GPS. With In-Car or Handheld Battery Powered Operation the GPS 501 is the Ideal Portable GPS unit. It is even able to advise you on screen and by voice assistance your current position, coordinates and user selectable map datums. Ideal for outback driving and outdoor pursuits the GPS 501 can record your route using bread crumb tracking.
