Please help me.Allthough i'm only at present able to use my local library computer they have started to upgrade them. The other day i connected my sd card and my garmin 760 into the usb ports.I managed to read of the both.So i thought being unsure of what to do dirrect on to sat nav i attempted to copy the files off my garmin,Some only took monts to copy, come minutes and one file took 41 mins. And yes when i checked the contents of the sd card all my garmin files were on there. That is the good news.So i disconected and then put the card into my Sat nav only to find the sd card empty.I did have some mp3 s on there which i deleted to make room, which did delete but now i'm wondering where did i go wrong???? anyone????Someone,i think Paul advised me to create a folder and then copy on to disc, but this to me,is dificult and i need help.even downloaded the poi loader onto the card but alas empty,Help please.Regards John |

OK i think I've got the gist of this.
The 760 doesn't come with an SD Card anyway so anything on it is replaceable. It'll only be mp3 and POIs if anything.
The first question is
- Does the Nuvi still work OK? if so, no panic. If not, we may have trouble.
Then, as MaFt asked above
- What where you trying to do?
If you are unsure of doing anything i would stop now and make sure either you know what to do and how to do it, or you have someone else there who knows what to do.
The advise i gave was to copy the contents of the Nuvi on a CD as a backup. If you are not sure how to do this (or if the library won't allow you to do this) then i would not attempt it.
Finally

POILoader doesn't go onto the card at all. You install it to your PC. |

On an SD card you can only have pictures, mp3s, POIs and 1 support map for your garmin. Any other file it wont be recognised by the unit.
You can have mp3s and pictures wherever you want, but pois and the map must be in a folder named "garmin" for the unit to find it.
There are instructions on how to load POIs in this site.
For an additional map the process is a little more complicated as it has to be unlocked to work with your unit |

Sorry i must have missed this...
I believe popcornpopcorn is trying to backup his Nuvi unit. However unless the library computers allow you to burn data to DVDs there is no point in doing this. Unless you can find someone who can lend you a PC with a DVD Writer for a couple of hours i wouldn't try much else.
If you do get access to a PC you need to copy the contents of the Nuvi Internal Drive to a folder on the PC and then burn that to a DVD. At no point does this process involve an SD Card.
It might be best to find find someone who knows how to do this and get them to do it or show you. If in doubt, please stop now. |

The best way to do a backup is:-
Connect nuvi to PC
Open nuvi in Windows Explorer
Ensure that Explorer has the option set to display hidden files.
Create empty folder on your PC
Select all folders and files at top level of nuvi
Copy to newly created empty folder
Go have a cup of coffee (or two) it's not a quick process - let it complete.
Burn the files to DVD/CD as you see fit.
For upgrades to the nuvi firmware and other bits (BT / Icons/Voices) use the GARMIN supplied WebUpdater - have a look at the GARMIN site to get a free copy of this - it does it all the upgrading for you.
For POIs - use POILoader - it's the only way to get them loaded onto a nuvi - don't forget - when loading POIs it deletes all existing user POIs and replaces them with the 'new' ones. So you need to keep all your personal POIs (inc speed cams from here) in a fixed place on your PC - another folder perhaps.
If you are trying to do all this without access to a PC - I think you may find it very difficult. _________________ Phil |
