Andy_P:

I fully accept what you are saying about TT filling in loopholes in their system, and that people should be aware of the possible consequences of their actions, including invalidating any guarantee or assistance service that TT may (or may not) offer.

There are important principles being discussed here. Surely we should give fellow navigators the option of either leaving things on their system set to the standard build or discussing possible legal modifications if they wish to travel along that road, not telling them to shut up. I appreciate this is not the stance you are taking, but others appear to.

I'm not forcing anyone to follow my actions, only explaining what I've done and the outcome.

As far as any discussion on this Forum influencing TTs operating methods, I'm sure any sensible company would be monitoring ALL Forums and Boards for ANY mention of their products.

As has been pointed out by other contributors, the method I used to update my 720 is freely discussed elsewhere, so attempts to stifle discussion here would, in my view, be a retrograde step in what is a fair and open Forum.

TomTom One XL T

Upgraded to 8.010 this afternoon at work and gave it a test drive on the way home (never usually use my TT for my commute as I know the way!)

-not fussed about losing the compass
-new car icon. Oh wowie Confused
- TMC seems better (never worked at all before) but it will take a longer drive before I'm convinced

My big problem is that I've lost my TT (not PGPSW) speed camera alerts. The warning flashes up on the screen but the sound alert has gone Mad Any way of getting them back??

Personally I'm delighted to get feedback from other users regarding the use of v8 maps on X20 devices. There's only one reason why I haven't done it and that is that I don't consider the "Sale" saving worth it. I'm going to wait for the new version rather than save £20. Then if it isn't released for the X20s I might consider getting it as a 730 version instead.

I'm not sure about TT possibly taking action because various fora indicate that this can be done. There must be thousands of suckers out there who don't even know that the fora exist and who wouldn't consider trying to upgrade with the "wrong" maps. If even all the proportionately few owners who do read them upgrade like this, it's hardly likely to make much of a dent in TTs profits.

Just one month ago I downloaded the v720 maps for my Go720 at a cost of £75. The chance of me lashing out yet more money in the near future for another map is bleak. If everyone who downloaded the v720 goes on to buy the new v8 map then Tomtom will have made a killing indeed.

Grrrrr! I wish I could turn the clock back.

Taken the plunge too with the version 8.05 map onto my 720.
Installed fine onto the sd card (any disadvantage of doing this?) as this way I have the fallback of the orginal map just in case. All appears to be working well. Not been out but planned a few demo routes and the change lane function works. Copied across my speedcam files and other pois which are up and running too.

BTW where does TT Home store the downloaded maps?

Thanks

Bal

Putting western & central Europe maps on a 720 isn't supported by TomTom officially but many here have done it.
Below is a message i got from TT support.

Because the map is not currently installed on your unit, this is why TomTom HOME is offering it. We highly recommend that you do not install this map on your unit, as the GO 720 does not support the map of Western and Central Europe. The only devices that support this map are the GO 700, GO 910, GO 920 and the GO 930.

With Best Regards

The TomTom Customer Support Team

By the way Bal, you will find downloaded maps in your home folder, just click through until you see the yellow folder icon that says downloaded.
There are two if i remember right, one says downloads from device the other just downloads, when you click that you will see another that says maps. This is how it is on my system.

Edit, Would just like to say that the lane guidance on the 8.05 maps is really cool, has anyone noticed that the screen is an almost "live" shot of the junction layout. If the rest of the mapping had this graphic excellence then that would be a real bonus.

Been using my TT920T since I updated and the RDMS-TMC is working again, but it loses signal in towns but is fine on Motorways/A roads.

Also I have noticed that when it goes to the planning route screen it seems to lag quite a bit even with a reset. It used to total up the roads and the bar used to slowly fill up where as now it has a little bit in the bar then pings up about 5 seconds late with a route.

Thanks guys. Thumbs Up

It's also giving me the option to enable the IQ function, will be interesting to see how that pans out.

The vs8 maps that contain the IQ Routes data and the Lane Assist information are only currently listed as available for the x30 devices, they will be made available at some future point no doubt.

A couple of forum members have reported purchasing vs8 maps via TT Home and getting them working on the 920 units, so it might work but this is an expensive gamble with no support or money back from TT if it fails.

I would complain to TomTom though as you don't have the latest maps for your device, you need the version 720 maps as these are the latest release for the Go-x20 units. Give them a ring on Monday morning (0845 161 0009) and demand map updates for each of the maps installed to your unit, you should get the North American and Europe maps at version 720 - Mike

I purchased 730 maps for my 720 and all the new features are working well. I am pleased however when it calculates the iq route it says weekday for eg, how can I change the day or time it chooses for IQ routing?

I forgot to give my reasons!Laughing

I have a Go720.

Firstly, if you go to their website Mapshop and select "Go720", it SUGGESTS the Western and Central Europe map.

Secondly, TomTom actually GAVE me the v710 LARGE version (intended for the 910) of Western and Central Europe (I won't go into why they did...)

When I said "Thank you very much!" but mentioned that it would need to go on an SD card as it was too big for the internal memory, they actually apologised(Smile !) and sent me the "2GByte" version instead, but by that time the v715 editions had come out so that's what I got!

Since then I have been running them both (one on SD one on internal) with no problems at all.

Do you think they REALLY meant "The v8 W+CE map is not supported..."?

If you do "Navigate to..." it calculates the route as if you are going t do it now. If you do "Prepare route" you get a choice of Today, Tomorrow, Weekday or Weekend and thats it I'm afraid.
