Oh, it's a camera to catch time travellers rather than commuters
Maybe the gas is used to sort the cars - those caught speeding are ejected from the road by gas pressure and have to wait in the empty car park until their offence has been dealt with
It all sounds very high-tech though _________________ Andy

i'm sure i read somewhere, and google's not helping me either... but wasnt there a new camera made that detects speed of vehicles on approach and takes a picture (get the drivers face) an also takes a photo on passing (to get motorbike number plates)?
could it be one of these?

Okay... I went out for lunch and had a look.
I couldn't remember for certain whether, if I was going SW along the A3, whether I was supposed to be looking at the camera just before or just after the Asda! . So I walked to both - aren't legs slow!!
Anyway, going SW, the first thing you see (before Asda) is a perfectly normal Gatso (GATSO:3283@40). But, opposite that on the other carriageway is strange grey camera.
Closer inspection, it's pretty obviously a Bus Lane camera, and has been there for some time:
That HAS got things pointing in different directions but isn't what we are looking for....
Moving further SW (past Asda), to the exact position where GATSO:3282@40 is marked, we DO have something new.....
Pics in order as you approach:
So...
1. There ARE white lines on BOTH sides of the camera (but only on the SW-bound carriageway).
2. It is ONLY rear facing - there are several "windows" (including one in the angled bottom section) but they are all on the same side.
3. It doesn't look like it could ever turn around.
4. There are TWO more posts, one on either side of it, with nothing on them at the moment, but with new underground cabling running to them from the main camera post.
5. I didn't see any obvious markings to say who the manufacturer was.
UPDATE: The equipment at this test site is constantly changing. Here's a picture of another post at the same site, probably an IR illuminator:

Nice one Andy - it doesn't look quite as I remember, but I did only get a quick look at it at the time.
Maybe a speed + ANPR cam?
Wonder what the first set of lines is for? |

I wonder what the grey pole before the camera is for though? it is obviously connected to the camera because they have dug up the pavement between the two - Mke |

I wonder if the empty poles in the pictures are for some yet to be installed equipment which necessitated the other lines As you say, the new cabling suggests something is coming, very odd. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Looking at the first picture (not the Bus Lane ones) there seems to be several components to the system. The "camera" with the windows, 2 grey poles and 2 short boxes. It looks like the dugup pavement joins all 5 together. Perhaps there are more bits to come and will explain the road markings before the "camera".
edit: I noticed it first but the two jokers above me are faster on their keyboards.....

Do'ya know... I completely missed the small boxes! How unobservant is that?
It's definitely "work in progress". in the last picture but one, you can just see some of the blue rope that they always use to pull cables through pipes and ducting, hanging out of one of the empty posts. |

I guess they'll be (re)moving the street lighting too? The pole looks like it'll be in frame for any pics that are taken.
Another thing that struck me as strange was the road markings. The bars are much thicker than usual - suggests to me that they are designed to be visible in poor light conditions, like heavy rain, or for use with a video feed.
Maybe the second pole is for a secondary flash or alternate light source (IR?)? |

The other fairly interesting thing, but probably not relevant, is the SLOW sign on the pavement |

Maybe not because the photo wasn't taken from behind the camera in question, hence other 'road furniture' appears to be more obtrusive than it really is _________________ Andy

I'm sure you're kidding but in case you're not, it's a cycle path! And the 'SLOW' warning is because the path crosses a road entrance. _________________ Darren Griffin |
