I bought a Garmin GPSMap76S so that when I go on walks, I will know where I am at all times! There is one problem...... footpaths are not on the the base map, I have metroguid v6.0 and the rural areas are blank, no footpaths!!! I lookea at the level of detail on the Roads & Recreational Mapsource and there are no footpaths on them( is walking in the countryside not classed as recreational, is is that just walking around city centers?) I feel incredibly hard done by puchasing this GPS reciever as if I had bought a pocket PC I could have bought a bluetooth gps thus having ordinance survey level of details maps to show me where I am and what footpath I'm on!!! Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

The thing is, none of the maps you get from garmin for the UK are of topo/ordinace survey level of detail...apparently it will cost too much for them to get the license to have topo maps and so the true way of using a gps, out and about in the countryside is a total loss as you don't have enough level of detail on the maps provided by garmin guide you to where ever you want to go......I had to by an ordinace survey map whilst in wales and use the coordinates on my gps to see where I was! Sad I spent aproximate £400 on my GPS and with out any other extra maps showing more detail the thing is not worth the plastic it's cased in :|

Does anyone else feel like this with the level of detail in the maps you can put on your GPS for the countryside?

Did you know you can use this device together with a Pocket PC ? The Garmin would provide the position and the Pocket PC could show the OS maps...

Have a look at http://www.fugawi.com/docs/maptopoframe.html I use Memory-Map 2004 OS to set up routes on my PC and then export them to my Garmin eTrex Legend. The level of detail on the basemap is not that important when following a route.

The Fugawi OS maps seem to be a lot cheaper than those from Memory-Map.

You can also use Anquet maps with a Garmin. Import routes into the GPS and also print off your own OS paper maps covering the area of your intended route.
