The ONE XL is generally thought to be a very good bit of kit.
I think it should come with the "Latest Maps Guarantee" now.

oh right, so would you folks recommend i go for the tomtom one v3, or the tomtom one xl?

the difference in price is minimal to be honest. I just to get the best bit of kit for my money.

ONE XL for me...
Too many crippled features on the ONE 3rd Edition and forever limited to the size of the internal memory.

One XL without a doubt, you have the full menu selection available, an SD card slot and the option to use RDS-TMC or GPRS TMC via your mobile phone.
Unless the One Third Edition software is sorted out to release its true potential with a full menu etc. I wouldn't hesitate between the two, the extra screen size also helps with the XL - Mike

thanks for the feedback guys. looks like the one xl then.

are there any new featurs in the one v3 which i wouldn't get in the one xl?

one xl will have:
- latest maps
- speed cams
- mapshare

won't it?

just a quick queery, with this mapshare thing, can you add your own routes and edit the map and route finder etc?

i know you can add POI's etc and new roads, but, for example, i take a totally back street route when to go to work, and it's always annoyed me that my system just doesn't learn my route. every day it tries to take me a certain way and is constantly recalculating when i go my way. so can you "make up" your own routes?

thanks.

Correct although the TomTom cameras that you will get are a one shot trial, updated only come by subscription and as hopefully others will agree, our database is vastly better and more accurate.

No, MapShare is a method or correcting and reporting small errors such as traffic direction, junctions etc only. You cannot change the routing algorithms.

As above no, you can create an Itinerary which will use a pre-defined route between waypoints you choose but that is all. At the end of the day, a navigation system is there for when you don't know the way, if you do then why worry?

thanks.[/quote]

It's not a worry, it's just annoying. I use the system from day to day on routes i already know just for picking up speed cams, speed limits etc. It's just annoying having the words "re-calculating..." ringing in your ears all day. It'd be nice if you could teach it a faster route so it follows that instead of it's pre-determined one. especially when you can guarantee your way is much quicker.

Indeed, however you don't need an active route to have the functionality of speed cameras and speed limits, these will still function even when no route is defined?

cool, so i'm set on the xl then. does that have all the same functionality and options as the one v3? like displaying speed limits, setting alerts etc.

there's a lot of functions i've read about in the v3 which i really like the sound of. are they also in the xl?

The XL has additional functionality than the One Third Edition when you compare the two devices as supplied, it is possible to "release" certain blocked functions on the Third Edition, but you cannot use a GPRS data connection with a Third Edition as it doesn't have the required hardware, the XL offers a Bluetooth connection for your mobile phone to supply GPRS data for certain functions.
Anything the One Third Editiion can do the One XL will do, just bear in mind the One XL can do quite a bit more - Mike

Guys, it's Christmas Day and I bought my wife a TomTom One v3 as she has no sense of direction ... sadly it took the Home software (for Mac) a mere 10 minutes or so to wreck it.

But thanks to the advice in this thread, I have resurrected it. I just thought I ought to join your forum so I could post my thanks for the advice.

Merry Christmas, One and all. Very Happy

I think I'm going to stick around, if these things are so easily broken, I may be needing advice again soon. Confused

Merry xmas and welcome christownsend. One thing to do is to make a back-up of your TT if you have not already done so. Simply copy the contents of your device to another folder using windows explorer and that way you will always be able to restore it and get going again. There is alot to learn from this site and you will be amazed what you will learn in the space of 2-3 weeks.
