Re the response from 999tommo
It would perhaps, be interesting to see the UK police accident numbers broken down by driver category, to see where the most incidents of accidents occur.
My perception is that they still 'get away with murder.'
Excuses, excuses...'had to attend an urgent meeting' stands out as one that comes to mind...'couldn't recall who was driving' was another recent one.
But the police of course, are just like the rest of our public servants when it comes to an inquest of what went wrong ;
1 'Nobody was to blame'
2 'Lessons have been learnt'
I rest my case. |

How much did your last accident cost you? My pheasant cost me £350, the deer cost me £1,350 (not considering that neither of them paid any compensation for loss of earnings - self employed whitevanmen without a white van don't earn). |
Dennis,
Look on the bright side. At least if the pheasant or deer had been a poor Police driver, you would have got money out of them. _________________ Tommo...

If I remember correctly from all those programmes on TV like 'Traffic Cops', a police driver doesn't always come off lightly if they're involved in an accident.
We should be grateful that 999tommo always endeavours to give a helpful, impartial response. _________________ Andy

It won't be much consolation to the injured pedestrian or motorist, that the crap Police driver got hurt too !!
I think there should be some form of regular refresher training for Police drivers, but the logistics of arranging this, particularly in the larger Forces, makes this pretty impossible. In a Force of say 5000 cops, if they received a refresher every five years, that's 1000 cops a year, or nearly 3 per day, on top of all the training which is done anyway. _________________ Tommo...

Everytime there is an accident the first "solution" looked at is how much money can i get, whether it is the police or health service.
I wonder how much money is "sued" from the police each year, particularly on trival points, when that could have been better spent on more police on the beat? _________________ TomTom Go 60

It's not just the Police getting sued. All over the place folk are making illegal claims on fictitious injuries. I have been to an accident where the car was rear ended making a scrape on the bumper. Due to the protests of the driver, the Fire Service came and cut the roof off the car which was three months old. No doubt a large claim followed.

It is quite possible that they get their fair share of bogus claims but I can't help but think that if one was inclined to persue a trivial claim against someone in the hope of a payout or settlement, surely you would be better off find a softer target than the Police!

That's the problem the police are a soft target, i know you can't believe everything you read but the police seem to give in easily when being chased for claims, even from their own staff.
They are frightened of being chased through the courts - bad publicity and all that.
This no doubt, is the same for all three services. _________________ TomTom Go 60
