They say that speed cameras have done virtually nothing to improve road safetly and claim that drink driving and a lack of "real" (ie non-robotised) traffic policing is a major problem.
Due to our lack of improvement, we no longer have the safest roads in Europe. _________________ Gone fishing!
The multiplication of speed cameras is no surprise to any of us, as numerous threads on the subject and the rise of the pgpsw database here can confirm.
This is more proof that speed cameras are just a "cash cow".
Although on the face of the survey the UK's shows that at 54 death's per million, it is one of the highest in Europe, as with all these figure's in survey's, it doesn't really tell us a lot.
What does that figure mean?
You need to know the % of drivers on the road per million to give it something to compare it to!
You can take it a step further and compare it with Africa, where for instance in Sierra Leone it is only 16 deaths per million, the nearest African country to ours is Tanzania at 52 and Ghana at 56 per million, but we all know that very few people per million drive in these countries and if you have seen the roads as i have, the driving standards and deaths are a lot worse % per person, here in the UK, there are a lot more road users per million, nearly every household has a vehicle of some type - additionally which, there are all the extra 1000's of lorry's, buses etc on the road added on top.
I feel this is just another set of figures to make a newspaper story.
Yes we all can all understand that drink drivers has increased, also drugged drivers, with no noticeable police presence nobody is surprised, all the speed camera's do is earn cash from the motorists going about there ordinary lives.
I have often driven from one side of the UK to the other and haven't seen any police, including on the countries biggest race track (as well as car park) the M25, JUST CAMERA'S.
Note: 8O In Swaziland the deaths rise to 313 per million and this is with a low % driving - maybe they shoot each other. _________________ TomTom Go 60

The article says that there are 4875 cameras on British Roads, which makes our camera database figures interesting:
There are a total of 11,060 verified cameras in the database and 1,242 unverified mobile sites (total combined: 12,303). 3,910 Gatso/Monitron/Truvelo/RedSpeed, 5,887 Mobiles, 5 Temporary, 258 Specs and 999 Redlight Cameras.
We've obviously got them covered! _________________ Regards

If there figure is correct and assuming they are only counting fixed cameras,
then at 3,910 we have quite a considerable number missing, if specs and redlight are also included, then we have quite a number of duplicates. _________________ Graham.

If we have got so many fixed cameras missing then there is an opportunity for a few more lifetime memberships! But I suspect it is the figure supplied that is wrong. There are no firm stats for camera numbers so who knows _________________ Darren Griffin

As with all numbers and stats they can easily be manipulated to add a certain amount of truth in order to add credibility to an article. _________________ Graham.
