Earlier this week, I went through (ooops, drove past) a red light camera, but the camera warning said "Gatso, thirty mph".

There are loads of red light cameras out there which are painted yellow, which I always thought meant that in addition to catching red light jumpers, also act as speed cameras when the lights are green.
This week, I've driven past yellow "red light" cameras of two sorts, namely yellow ones which have road markings like a Gatso and yellow ones without road markings.
Then there are grey ones.
All three types are definitely pointing at (and right on top of) traffic lights.

Can somebody put me straight?

Do you mean on top of the traffic lights themselves? If so, i'm sure they are not traffic light cameras. These are usually there to monitor the flow of traffic and adjust the phasing as appropriate.

Red Light cameras are usually a few metters before the lights - i've only seen grey ones but differenet partnerships may paint them different colours. Also Red Light Cmaeras don't normally have road markings either. The yellow ones that look lke Red Light Cmaeras with road markings are usually Monitron cameras.

This is a Red Light Camera as i've always seen them - http://www.speedcamerasuk.com/traffic-light-camera.htm

monitron were bought out by a company called RedSpeed so i assume then that the 'monitron's at redlight junctions are in fact red speed cams and will get you for speed as well as jumping lights?

The three cameras I'm talking about are ...
1. A grey camera (fat or thin, oblong or square) either up a tall (3 metre?) pole, or on a small pole, with or without an elbow mounting, just a few metres before the red light junction. I have no doubt that this is simply a camera to catch red light offenders.
2. A camera on top of a tall (3 metre?) pole, painted yellow, just a few metres before the red light junction. No road markings. Possibly has a buried loop, but not always.
3. A camera on top of a tall (3 metre?) pole, painted yellow, just a few metres before the red light junction. Road markings like a Gatso. Possibly has a buried loop, but not always.

In my opinion, I consider ANY yellow painted camera to be a speed camera. I thought there is currently a "rule" that (fixed) speed cameras must be painted yellow. In the case of 2 and 3 above, they are without doubt red light offence cameras, but I also think they double up as speed cameras. I drive accordingly in their vicinity.

So far, I've not heard from anybody who actually knows, that's the reason for this post. One cause for confusion is the brand name "Redspeed", which, having bought Monitron, can be merely a speed camera, but the name just might be pretty self-explanatory - both speed and red light. I just don't know.

I personally download and install the PGPSW Redlight cameras, but I've seen posts from people who don't, simply because they never jump a red light. But they may be missing out on some speed cameras.
