The ViaMichelin Advantage program is now online and it looks that a 2 year subscrition for map updates works out at £68 with updates in May and October. Personally I think that's a very good price considering other places charge £100 for a one off update.

Maybe I haven't read it correctly so I'll make sure before I subscribe.

Hi,

I have just got a via michelin x980T and so far im quite impressed.

Im having trouble uploading the speed camera files

If i use the file downloaded of the web site is says it wont work with my version - I just upgraded to 6.5.

Also if i try and import the PGPSW files it crashes content manager.
I used the ASC files and made categories and imported them and it crashes after a third of the first import.

Any ideas?

Are you talking about the cameras from the Michelin site? If so make sure your download the 'Europe' speed camera file not the UK one.
As it's a Europe map it expects all speed cameras to be loaded, not just he UK ones.

I tried downloading the Michelin ones and had the same problem as outlined by jonandmarkuk as I was trying to download UK only and not Europe.

I have successfully downloaded the PGPSW database by selecting 'OTHER' on the first camera download page and then 'SPEED ZONED COMPLETE' on the second page. Unzip the files to a directory on your PC and then you have to go through the icons which are 22x22 pixels and reduce them to 16x16 pixels to enable import to ViaMichelin. Then go to Content Manager and select 'My POI's' from the My ViaMichelin tab, and either right click and create folder or click the left hand icon of the three in the bottom of the same column. Name the folder 'Gatso 30' for example, on the next line is a box with three dots, click it and browse to the file 'pocketgps_uk_gatso_30.asc and select it, then select new icon and browse to the file 'pocketgps_uk_gatso_30.bmp and select it. Choose the icon which will now be shown in the box. Click OK and the file will be imported for that camera type / speed. You now have to repeat that for each type / speed.

When updating each time ensure you do not overwrite the bmp files otherwise you will have to resize them again.

This is as far as I have got, I can see the cameras on screen but am still in the process of setting warnings etc.

Hope that helps

Mike

I managed to upload the ASC files with individual categories using the content manager App. It didnt like the Redlight file for some reason. I did trace this to line 450. But deleting this line had no effect??

I think i tried the European file. Same result Wrong software version on the device.

Having got the files on the device successfully i cant seem to find the POI files on any menu??

Any Ideas?

Hi Paul,

I had trouble with the bmp for gatso 30 but otherwise ok.

I don't understand the problem you're having with their own database at all.

If you go into the main menu and select My ViaMichelin, select My POI's, you will then see all the camera types, select each one in turn and select Display on map ON and Warning ON.

I still haven't had enough free time to set warnings etc yet but have run a demo and the cameras appear. Turn their own cameras off if you don't want duplication.

Update:

To enable warning for the method I described above you have to go to 'Main menu', 'Settings', 'Alert', ' Warning sound', go to page 2 and turn 'Saved addresses alert' ON. This is because this is the My ViaMichelin POI alert. This gives a warning at 450 yards and 250 yards on a 40mph Gatso.

I've also turned their cameras back on and enabled voice synthesis alert, thisenables comparison.

I'm not sure if I'm doing this correctly, I'm sure you'll let me know if there's a simpler more effective way.

If i select My ViaMichelin there is nothin there in the next screen.
That would explain it.

Im going to have a play to see if i can make them appear. They are on the SD card in the same direcotory as the other POI's with the extension PPI

OK fixed it.. well almost.

The basic problem was i had nothing in my MyViaMichelin menu.

following a restore SD card

I eventually manged to use the Content Manager to trasnfer addresses which enlived the menu.

I can now transfer addresses and POI's - Camera files without problem.

The Michelin camera files will not transfer though

Just remembered I installed the speed cameras when using 6.1 not 6.5 but as it's an EXE file which just installs them it shouldn't matter.

Maybe with 6.5 being so new they haven't updated the software to recognise that version?
Once you are able to get them installed the added bonus is the text to speed as it will say "Speed control 40 mph in 450yards" or something like that.

I think support are very busy at the moment as the response time from them has gone from the average of a day to over a week??? Hopefully they will get it all sorted out.

I installed their cameras with version 6.5 OK by following the instructions supplied, so I don't why it wouldn't work for you, unless you can give more detail.

Support replied to 2 emails within about 24 hours with me. One was to say that the FAQ's won't work and I get an internal server error, they said they are aware of the problem, apparently this has been the case for a while now, I have found out since.

Hi,

It all works now. Loaded the Europe camera file and it loaded ok.

quite neat the way it uploads saved info from the device to MyviaMichelin.

Got all the warnings working. shame it doesnt speak the PGPSW speed cams.

Cant find any way of doing this either as it seems the Uploaded files are a different format to the standard poi's.

"EU and the United States have signed (June 2004) an agreement to ensure compatibility between their rival satellite positioning systems. The deal means the two sides will agree common operating standards for the American Global Positioning System (GPS) and the European Galileo project, currently under development. It determines how Galileo's frequencies should be structured, which will allow signals to be jammed in war zones if necessary. The agreement will create a world standard for signals, which means that users will be able to obtain signals from both systems. "

Cheers, 7&Y

You misunderstand what this agreement provides for. Galileo is not comaptible with current Navstar GPS receivers. The agreement provides for a set of standards such that GPS Chipset manufacturers can now design dual standard chipsets that will work with both constellations if and when Galileo ever becomes a reality.

To access Galileo you will need a new receiver, if you choose you will be able to buy a dual standard Navstar/Galileo unit but you will not be able to receive Galileo with a current Navstar only chipset.
