|
|
Having been a Tomtom user for a number of years I was excited at the prospect of the new One XL. Unfortunately the unit has been rendered totally useless by the worst, most badly designed windscreen mount I have ever seen. On my first attempt at using the unit I tried pressing the mount onto the screen a number of times, only for it to fall off after a few seconds each time. I eventually got it to hold securely by pressing so hard I could heard a slight flexing noise coming from the edges of the screen !!!!
Once it was actually fixed I encountered the second problem – due to the short distance between the suction cup and the mounting bracket, and the angle of the windscreen, I couldn’t actually fit the XL onto the bracket. Even when I finally managed, because of the angle of the glass and the size of the XL the display couldn’t be mounted upright. Finally, I found that because of the shortness of the mount, the XL ends up very close to the screen ….but a long way away from me !! I have to stretch right across the dashboard for my fingertips to be able to reach the unit.
I feel the mount is totally unsatisfactory and a complete waste of time and money. I guess I will have to try the alternative mounting kit that Tomtom advertise, but I’d be really interested to see if any third party manufacturers come up with a better mounting solution. Meanwhile I continue to use my original One unit, with a large lever operated mount which works flawlessly. Why on earth did anyone feel they could improve on something that already works fine. Has anyone else had any similar experiences or have any comments as to possible solutions ??

Agree 100% .. I have a TomTom One v2 with the same mount & its totally useless. My TT spent more time on the floor than "sticking" on the windscreen; until ...........
I bought a "lever" version off eBay & its brilliant .. I could lift the windscreen out with it!
Now I am a very happy bunny ;) |

I agree the mount looks flimsy, but if slightly moistened mine never falls off. It has worked reliably since last October.

To be honest I don't like the Goose Neck holders as they tend to let the unit vibrate, a much better solution is the alternate mount see Here but only use the actual holder part.
The holder is compatible with the Herbert Richter range of mounts which offer a far more solid mounting arrangement, or use the Brodit system in conjunction with the Brodit/ HR adapter, probably not the cheapest solution but I would guess they are the best in terms of installed performance - Mike |

Thanks for that guys. When I was using a PDA for navigation I got a great phone holder from Halfords which was similar. The bracket on the end seems to be a universal fitting.
Thanks again |

The four slot/clip type are known as a 'Herbert Richter' mounts because the design and copyright is theirs.

i hang arround in here because its the best place to come i have had many years of testing products as my job is a product specialist for a very well know stolen vehicle security system.and as i cover arround 80.000 miles a year have become intrested in sat nav systems
and have had many.so i hang arround in here to find out whats new.
but would like to add aftersales service is more important than the product
and tomtom just does not look after its customers.
i have spent thousands of pounds with tomtom on many of its sat nav systems.
and when i wrote to them they did not even reply to my letter.
tomtom is a good product with a few problems just like many others out there. but there after sales service needs new to be looked into.
tomtom you know who i am and i am sure you read the comments in this forum so a reply to my letter is the least you could do
i rest my case |
