is the tmc data any different from the gprs data?
I've been using traffic for the past 18 months and finally the gprs data is reliable and mostly upto date - does gprs use the same data -
I' m not sure I'd be happy about the regional data on tmc though, I often do a 220 mile drive upto Lancashire and have the choice of A1 M62 or A14 M6 M62 (only about 10 miles in it either way) and would be gutted not to get details of problems further into my journey as that would completely change my route... _________________ -----------------------------------------------------------

I think the GPRS data will be the same as the TMC data - both from Itis.
Can someone else confirm if they only get regional traffic information as well - I would have thought the same data would have been broadcast nationally. |

I asked the same question to Tomtom and they replied by pointing me to the following:
http://www.tomtom.com/page.php?Page=rds-tmc
Doesn't completely answer the question, I interpret it as the 2 offer basically the same information w.r.t traffic from itis, by tomtom refer the their plus service as more "accurate" and "high performance" although when you look at the details. I think this means that you can get extra info like wetaher and read condition, which is pretty useless really as I find the best way of checking weather and road conditions is to look out of the window....clearly they are lookig at differentiating their service to justify ongoing yearly subscription..

i've started a new thread under "RDS-TMC Traffic or TomTom Traffic" (in the UK) for your opinions on both services as this thread was originally about the receiver being available in Europe, etc |

Do people get disconnections from the TMC receiver when the mount disconnects on the x10 series? (I didn't think the new mount cured this problem - the software update hid the problem). |

Nothing to do with the mount.
just MAKE SURE you have straightened out the cable as much as possible and selected, under tmc country, "Strongest Signal" I've found this is much more reliable and tends to lock onto radio 4 and classic fm quite a lot.
I've found when you select "United Kingdom" it seems to hunt down the local stations first then if that fails, it will lock onto the regional ones.
This is what your experiencing with the dropping out of the signal. Hope this helps.

If it's locking into Radio 4 it is not working. Radio 4 does not broadcast TMC.
Seems to be a common fault with this device... TT are going to have to do an update quick or get a lot of returns I suspect. |

yay!
it worked this morning - put it on strongest signal as recommended above and eventually picked up classic.
it didn't pick up any delays on my route, so i thought it wasn't working (i travel M40 - M42 - M5 - M6 - M54 every day to work) - but, it was only only flipping correct! a clear run for the first time in weeks!
it did pick up delays on the other carriageway, so it was working.
the only negative, it took about 20 minutes to find classic and get reports - given that this was the first time it has found it, will it be quicker next time (now that it knows the frequency)?? |

Tomtom say
"The TMC receiver gives traffic information for the whole UK at one time"
So does not divide the info into regions. |

Well thats a load of rubbish.
When in the norfolk area, I can get traffic info ONLY for roughly a 150 mile radius.
Can someone else with the tmc receiver, go to "traffic" then "Browse Map" then zoom out and see how far their red dots expand to when hooked to classic FM.
Another question of mine, when radio eventually becomes digital, will our tmc receivers stop working??!! 8O |
