French camera database use?

Can some one tell me if it is legal to use the continental camera database in France/Spain (or any other continental country).
Opinion seems to be divided whether GPS based warinigs are legal or not.
I always thought it was illegal but in some English forums about living/visiting France I get the impression it is OK.

It could be a little long winded but you could try a search for France and Spain.

Spain: there "is" a link to a site with regards to Spain which definitely said it was illegal. (Although they do not seem to bother people using them) So, use at your own risk!

Well that says it is illegal to use a screen based device that the driver can see - So what about built in ones? Are you supposed to put a towel over it? :-)

Also I heard a nasty rumour about satnavs and cameras WRT France the other day.

Anyone know for sure about Europe by Country?
