Can you get Mini USB extension leads? I can't seem to find them anywhere! Specifically my idea is that ciggy lighter is on the left hand side of the centre console (by passengers right knee) and my i3 is at the top right of the dashboard. I'd run an extension under the dashboard and out in the passenger foot-well. Then if could just connect the ciggy lighter coiled lead to the female end in the foot-well and presto! POWER!!!!!

Is the clock out on this forum as I posted the above at 15:25 ish not 18:09
the answer to your prob could be a giggy lighter extension ( available in various lengths curly or straight ,from most car acc. shops or Ebay ) plugged into your socket and then the adapter into that, and then you could even put it in the boot !! (long as you take your foot out first )
Hope this helps if not keep takin the pills NORM

Used my new, coiled lead this afternoon - worked fine!

I've just reconnected the i3 to the cig lighter socket using the coiled lead, and it started to beep repeatedly for about 5 seconds, with various screens flashing - start-up, warning and count-down after external power source removed.

Then it settled down to the usual start-up screen - until I pressed the wheel when it started the whole performance again!

Tried the original lead then the coiled one again several times. Original one - fine. Coiled one - beeped and flashed every time.

Presumably it's a faulty connection issue, with intermittent power causing the i3 to keep turning on and off. Glad I only paid 2.95 for the lead! Sad

This Motorola V3 retractable car charger looks like a neater solution than the coiled one:
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/product/6446.htm

Costs four times as much, but may be a safer bet after my previous experience. Sad

Hi Anita
Just tried my curly lead running off a fully charged battery pack (12v car starter type) and it didn't work, garmin would switch on and off again, seems like the charger couldn't supply enough current as it does when the internal batteries are gettin flat.
So I checked the current draw of the original gigar plug power supply with the garmin working , the power supply draw was 0.12 to 0.20 amps depending on what it was doing at the time Then I checked the curly lead, it drew only 0.02 amps (thats a tenth of the required power)
as it switched on and off.-------So from that I would guess that the curly lead CANNOT supply the required current, you may have been lucky that yours did work for a short time till the electronics inside the power supply burnt out, so in plain english its fff---flippin not wurkin !!!!, I will do some re,surch on dis n let you know bout the other lead asap
Hope this helps NORM 8O

Thanks, NORM.

I wonder if that means that any lead designed for the Motorola V3 won't be suitable for the i3, or if it's just this one?

I await the results of your research with interest. Wink

ANITA ,
So------ then Idea I checked my mobile phone charger (nokia but a similar type of charger to the type we have bought )whilst charging my phone, and the current draw was 0.22 amps !! just over what the garmin required . SO in plane hinglish Wink , in theory a SIMILIAR type of phone charger SHOULD be able to run the garmin, depending on the current (that is amperage) losses through the charger /power supply !! Confused
Will post more when I find out Arrow

Just recieved my curly lead but not what I was after, the lead is rather stiff and not that stretchy, it will put too much pressure on the i3 socket where I have it so if you're expecting it to stretch any distance don't bother and it wasn't the angled version, I haven't tried it to see if it even powers up, still only 2.75 so no big loss.

Anita
Idea So ------- I then tried the curly lead charger still plugged into my battery pack on vol 4 and bingo working, change the volume to 5 and bang gone, seems like the charger has a thing called a crowbar ( an electrical circuit ) in it which prevents the current from going over 0.1 amps or 100mil amps if it goes over that it shuts down to prevent damage.
So that means the curly lead ones are trickle chargers (for the m/r phone ) and that a fast charger unit, prob genuine m/r, will prob work
Is every one asleep now Question !!! 8O Rolling Eyes I will try to check out the specs on various one's to find the ONE
WAKE UP EVERONE !!!! 8O
hope this helps NORM

I'm sure it would, NORM, if I could understand it. Confused

Are you saying it would work if the volume was kept at 4 or below?

I'm now more interested in the retractable lead, and will definitely order one for my mobile phone. Unfortunately the connector is different from the i3. I've e-mailed the retailer for more info and will let you know what they say.

Thanks for all your help.

I'll give the curly lead a try tomorrow with reduced volume.

NORM,

Just tried it with volume on 4 and it's fine. I'll just have to turn the stereo down :P

Have ordered one of the retractable ones. At worst it should perform in the same way as the curly one, and it will be much neater and easier to tuck away when not in use.

Thanks for your help. I wouldn't have thought of turning the volume down! Not Worthy
