Guys I have managed to install a program called POI Observer and the data base it was very very difficult as I had to go into french and german websites to get the details but I will give you some links so you can get started as I know theres a few of you out there with this unit. I can also tell you you can also run windows cE 4.2 applications I got a Divx player running and its sweet.

heres a picture and link of the french website of a sony running the software

http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=42820&whichpage=4&SearchTerms=sony

the program and its english guide are in the Navifriends website but you will have to register to download them its free so its ok and you have to use online translating tools to browse the site as its in german and I tell you installation is tough. heres the link to the site

Me too. Maybe we can pool knowledge at the end and do a step by step guide?

Scary.

Managed to get POI Observer running without much problem without the Sony software. Then ran the two together - was ok for a short while, then basically keeled over. I then had a few scary minutes when the unit wouldn't then work at all; no application, no nothing. Wouldn't even connect to the PC via activesync so no way of repairing it. Hard reset/soft reset made no odds.

Luckily it decided to reconnect to the PC in the end (20 minutes), so was able to get it back as shipped. So have abandoned POI Observer until I'm sure it really will work!

Be careful if you play!

But putting POI Observer on isn't actually too bad at all, to be honest, and it looks very good, so I might try again after the weekend.

Guys if you mess up remember you can just use the CD that comes with the unit to restore the unit to factory default, so dont worry if you have problems and with the poi observer each time you start up the unit I tend to let the virtcommgr to re capture the com port so it starts fresh and doesnt stall the system. I wanna write a mini guide but am very very busy at the mo but will help if i find time

Glurk.

Try as I might I've not succeeded in getting poibatcher to make me a .obs file. I've massaged the camera database into a form such that poibatcher accepts it.

It will process that successfully and create a .cat, .lvl,.nam, .dat, .rid and .mpl files, but just won't make a .obs file, which I think is all I now need for POI Observer to work?

Any clues? What have I missed I wonder?

It's very hard when you don't understand German!

Except that it doesn't work. At all.

Giotecno, answer me just one question. What comm ports are you using in the virtual comm port driver please?

I'm enjoying talking to myself. However.

Final definitive answer.

It DOES work. And if anyone is interested I'll document exactly how to do it - but I'm not going to bother if there's no interest because it's a fair number of steps.

But I've just been out for a test drive and my Sony U-70T is now showing me speed camera warnings using POI Observer.

First thing is to make the unit NOT boot into the nav-u software otherwise you can't proceed. You need to install a program called showtaskbar.exe as the boot software to get to Windows CE interface so you can do anything at all.

Done that bit or want help with it?

Yep Dippy is right you need to be able to access the windows CE start bar to give you the access required to load poi observer and other software e.g. divx player etc
